Blue Eyed Lamb

Hi everyone,

I was down at the farm this weekend and it's lambing season. There were so many frisky little bundles of white bouncing around the paddocks  There was a brand new hour old lamb there - It had blue eyes. I've never seen a blue eyed lamb before. Is this normal or a mutation/defect? It's such a gorgeous little one and is a twin, but the twin has brown eyes.

I'm just curious as the people who own the farm have no idea as the sheep are being leased on their property.

Would help to know what breed of sheep they are. Generally blue eyes come with pied or mixed coat like colouring in some animals. In horses there are a couple of blue eye like types called Glass-eye and Wall-eye.

I have seen cows with "blue Eyes" that look a bit like sheeps eyes (you can see a rectangular "pupil" in them). A holstein cow called A Tora Triple Threat Lulu was the most famous cow with "weird eyes" and was the dam of a very notable Holstein sire called Hanoverhill Inspiration who had thousands of daughters around the world.

Must be recessive as you don't see many.

Cheers

Oh sorry RIP, it's a Merrino. Forgot to add the breed ;) whoops. No mixed colouring in the coat and it is a purebred.

It reminded me of a goat's eyes because the pupil was so clear - much like the way you described the cows, PT. But it did look strange, but still very cute. It's the first blue eyed sheep I have ever seen. I tried googling pictures and information but was rather unsuccessful

Painted horses and Siberian huskies are other blue eye animals. Never seen a blue eye sheep. It sounds eerie. ;)

I've seen a blue eyed lamb, Amy's twin was one. Unfortunately he died at 1 week of age from some sort of illness. Amy was stronger, and she was taken to the vet.
