Posted May 30, 201014 yr Hi, i nearly bought an adult budgie today, a very pretty light green opaline hen, then i noticed she had splayed legs. She could sit on the perch okay (one leg on perch and one out to the side) but i was a bit worried because i would be using her to breed. So my question is, is it okay to breed a hen with splayed legs?

No...she would be no good for breeding, nor should be be bred with....after all the hen has to support the weight of the male on top of her and grip the perch in the mating act.
May 30, 201014 yr Hi Rachelm... As Kaz has said she shouldn't be used for breeding... She could have a dislocated hip...this happened to one of my birds and I had to have her euthanized, she too sat on the perch like that - one leg okay the other to the side...

Sorry no photos, i didn't buy her. A breeder at a bird expo/show told me she would be fine to breed. He was a member of a budgie club, he should know better.

I say "I want to breed violets", someone gives me a grey and says "it had a violet parent, it should throw you a violet or two". Why? Because some breeders will tell you what you want to her to sell you what they want to get rid of. I have had this happen to me for the last 2 years and I think its small wonder we are losing so many opportunities to bring in new members or keep them in the hobby. Fortunately I have stayed with it because I love breeding, but im much much more picky these days...

I am becoming more cautious. I didn't realise some breeders were so dodgy.

I didn't realise some breeders were so dodgy. alot of breeders are dodge even some members of your own club can be dodge you need to assess the birds yourself i found and if it is not up to all the check list dont buy it no matter how cheep how good the bloodline is and if you want a certain colour enhance in the bird like violet then you need to see either papers with colour and varierty of mum n dad or you need to be able to recognize a bird with this modifier you can see it a bird breed from a violet wont give you violet unless it carrys violet genetics and not all the chicks get the gene in saying this also their are some fantastic breeders whom go out of their way to make sure your getting a good bird and exactly what you want i know i always say if the bird does no good let me know we will fix the situation be it pet or breeder their are cases where its your choise though and all info about bird is given its then your choise i know i have brought birds the breeders told me are infirtile or not good bird for one reason or enother i sometimes chance it at my risk and more so than not the birds been fine you need to judge the birds inviroment compaired to your own and its general condition if its fixable then sometimes its worth a try theirs lines drawn though and a splade leg bird is not one i would buy to bred with
May 31, 201014 yr Yeah I only made the 'bred by violet parents bird will throw violets' mistake when I first got into the hobby and started buying birds. I've long since learned very few breeders (even champion exhibitors) are able to properly recognise violets or understand the breeding of them. I look forward to buying some 'cobalts' that the breeder doesnt realise are violet sky blues. It might sound sneaky, but in my experience breeders will not sell me their good violets, but they will gladly sell good 'cobalts'... In saying that I totally agree GB. There are some fantastic breeders out there who go out of their way to get you what you want, and be honest and say they cant help you if thats the truth rather than sell you something and TELL you its what you are after. There are some dodgy ones out there too, so its very much buyer beware. I find im TOO honest when selling birds - I tend to say all their faults rather than their good qualities!
