I thought you said the hen didn't breed? I would assume the mother would be split blue/violet.

No. I didnt exactly say that :)

Well he or she is violet and I figure dilute affects the way violet shows up too. I said Daddy as from the little I could see of him he looked to be a nice vibrant green.... maybe indicating violet but it was just a guess. Producing a mauve from her only means she carries dark factor not that she is violet.

Oh and S_C, birds are not split for violet they either are or they are not. It's a dominant gene - sorry if I miss read you though....

Yeah, looked too bright to be a dilute to me! Such cuties Kaz! And violet too.

I am still trying to figure out how violet came into it. But that dilute hen produced a mauve baby once with a light green dom pied father.

She could not produce a Mauve from the pairing to a Light Green. Could the Light Green Dom Pied have been a poorly coloured Dark Green perhaps.

No. The dom pied is the mother and she is dilute dom pied.

Most of the chicks are out of the nestbox today except the greywing blue who is clambering all over its mother. Beanbag is such a docile hen

The babies are in the kindie cage with some others except the greywing still in the nest with his mother who is laying again.

and, although these photos dont show it the chick does have violet feathers going on after all. The feathers are showing what looks like sky violet as we have two tones happening

but as usual when photographing blues and violets they dont show like they are in " real life"

I love chicks at that stage.... actually, I love them at any stage.

you must be glad you got one blue out of the nest

so if its violet and greywing

does that mean it can produce a lovely new colour!

nemly lavender!

as the violet will appear purplky but the greywing will dilute it to make a

powdery purple blue or LAVENDER

that is really cool, you will have to try and get that damn camera to show up that violet!

cant wait for more pictures :(

great pics

I love the name Bean Bag - did she have this before or have you only named her recently?

She has had this name for a long time. thus named because in the nest you can do anything with her...pick her up anbd move her and she just flops and is like handling a beanbag :(

Weird the colour aspect. I took the chick out for photos and what I am seeing is lavender blue feathering and cheek patches are lavender too but when I took photos the photos show blue and blue :( blues and violets must be the hardest thing to photograph and get the colours right

So.........here is what I am seeing ( photoshopped to show true colour )
