Semi Detatched Beak

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever had a baby with a semi detached beak?.I found him today huddled up and he was thin then to my horror i noticed his top beak had grown into the bottom one, while trying to get the top one out it has come loose at the top to the edge near the cere, poor little bugger his mouth was full of blood i crop needled him some ER formula but if he's not going to recover i will have to put him down.

Any good information no offence but not speculation and guessing i need to hear from someone who's had this happen before

Sounds like his Mum attacked him Trish. I dont think the beak will reattach at all and he may lose it. :)

doesnt look good for the poor thing, i think the best option would be to put it down, dont

let it suffer, how will it feed when it grows up?

sorry budgiebum, guess its just bad luck. how are the rest of the chicks?

I agree.Poor little blighter. :)

Beaks can be re-attached but it depends on the type and amount of damage, to be honest it is usually only attempted with endangered birds i.e. birds of prey, parrots, water fowl. It requires an operation of some length. When this happens in my aviary I simply put the bird down if the damage is too severe.

I went to the vet today to get him some pain killers all though his beak is a little loose in one corner at his top beak the vet said if i can keep him in and comfortable with pain meds the damage should grow out as he's only young,so he is being crop nedled and given extra doses of calcivet in his food to help it along. He is a gorgeous dominant pied and only a baby.If i had noticed it sooner it wouldn't have happened but his top beak grew long (like a Corella's) into his tongue he is resting and on anti inflammatory meds twice per day, nothing else i can do but keep him warm and comfy while he recovers. Thanks for everyone's input
