Posted May 20, 201015 yr Well the count down is on. 2 sleeps till the shield yeh. Actually i am not really looking forward to it. But I am mainly going to catch up with GB and a few other friends. I have 7 birds selected but nothing stunning about them I have been having trouble with pin feathers and blood feathers as they are not ready for a show and that's why I am not keen. The white DF spangle , everytime I try to clean his head he gts more blood on his head and the same for the violet spangle. Clearwing has come to my rescue and helping out because I was about the chuck the dummy. The violet hen scrawked something terriable when I tried to de spot her and I that scared she was going to die from a heartache that I screamed for help and clearwing heard all the to Mooroopna

May 21, 201015 yr Author Funny GB, I have spotted heaps of my birds but this hen just frieked out and 2 years ago when we were spotting my yellowface grey she just died, it was alwful. plucked her spots and she didn't even complain and then put her in the cage but she was dead, Greg gave her mouth to beak but no she must of had a heart attack, scary. One thing you never do is lay a budgie on it's back as they can die or put them upside down. Clearwing told me this and I believe to be right. As for hen I am not sure if we had her on her back or not but that is probably why she died. Edited May 21, 201015 yr by KAZ

May 21, 201015 yr One thing you never do is lay a budgie on it's back as they can die or put them upside down. Clearwing told me this and I believe to be right. I'm sorry but I have to disagree with that statement. I have held my budgies upside down on numerous occasions both young and old alike. Never lost one yet. Budgies by there own devices are found hanging upside down from branches when it suits them. Mother budgies feed the babies on their back for the first few days of life. As for spotting I stopped lucking years ago and cut the feathers instead. It leaves the mask with a fuller appearence and stops the problems with bad feather regrowth.
May 21, 201015 yr I have held many a budgie upside down for treatment and they didnt die. I believe the true issue here is what is happening to the birds crop when being held as pressure in the wrong places and being held incorrectly can force food from the crop into the lungs and a bird aspirates. In addition, I heard from someone once who could not understand why his chicks were dying not long after he leg-ring them. I checked the way they were holding the babies when ringing them and sure enough they were squashing the crop forcing crop contents up and out and into the lungs...the chicks died from aspirating crop contents. May 22, 201015 yr Author 6 birds going to shield now as the green boy lost his tail feathers. I was so annoyed because he had a blue ring and a red ring on because he was born middle of October and I double ringed a lot of birds. Any I had to cut the blue ring off him to show him at the shield which I did the same for the one boys. Well I didn't really want to cut the blue rings off seems they will be so much better for the shield next year. And this green cock is getting better as he gets older any way I cut his ring off and put him back in the cage and rats he drops his tail 5 minutes after, gee I was annoyed. Anyway he is out now.
