Pet Care And Feeding.......then And Now

They are very cute. Maggie looks to be doing well. Was it Maggie or her Mum that used to scoff the food, or throw up, or something? Didn't one of them have some issue related to food before?

Maggie's mother has pancreatitis. I wouldnt breed any dog that had an issue. Maggie is fine.

Just found out in research recently too that the issue Cricket has with her pancreas not working is due to over supply of calcium....the treatment when Cricket had pups and got milk fever was calcium doses by the vet while she was in hospital and also afterwards. The dosage can be overdosed as well as underdosed. Now we know why she got the pancreas issue.

Ah, thought it was Cricket, just could not remember.

I would not think you would breed any animal that is unwell. I know you well enough to say that would never happen.

Vets are funny aren't they?!?!?! In a person, we normally would get a second opinion if we disagreed with something, but with pets, we have this bad habit of initially taking the word of a vet, as if your own instincts with animals we know, was wrong.

hugs Kaz - you are doing a great job and they are all looking wonderful, yes i believe a lot of vets these days are made to push the stock a lot more than in the past.

personally i would think changing a diet that drastically on an animal with the stress of raising young is stupid, it would add more stress to the dog as it is something it is unfamiliar with and would upset their digestion track more than one raw egg.

I'm glad you are going to use a different vet, i didn't like the sound of this one from when Maggie and the runt Moo wasn't checked correctly in the first place.

unfortunately a lot of vets seem to be more worried about the $ in their pockets then the welfare of animals at times

I feed my hounds mostly raw meat and bones and they are doing fine on it, had a vet tell me once if i didnt feed eukanuba my pup would die a horrible death from malnutrition!

As the vets I was going to has several vets you can see, I have requested that we dont get allocated the vet I had the displeasure of talking with before....the dreaded Kevin.

However tonight we took Maggie and the pups for a follow up checkup to one of the other vets there. I wanted to show them she and pups were doing fine under our care.

Fact is, not only is Maggie feeding the pups well now, and we are feeding Maggie well.............Maggie had actually gained 2 kilos in the days since Saturday. If she was struggling to feed puppies on our food not the vets food, then she would not have gained weight at all. Not only are the pups and mother well and thriving but mother and pups both have gained weight. Pups have doubled size at least too.

I deliberately took them back for the checkup tonight because I wanted to prove that we knew what we were doing and that all was well.

The vets we saw tonight and all the vet nurses were thrilled to see maggie and pups looking so good

Suck eggs Kevin :D

Their looking good Mate. Dont stress as you know sometimes it takes a bit for the milk to run consistently.

Some vets really are 'city' vets. I have an older lady vet here I think she is just brilliant and has dealt with one of mine on 2 after hours calls, and picked the breed straight off. Also liking the dogs a bit lighter/fitter than heavier (like most vets these days) she always comments on the working dogs condition being spot-on.

I like my bitches to put on weight when nursing, you can always get it off after and a dog that loses alot of weight when nursing- well I think there is no excuse if its eating, I have seen some in terrible condition and the owners put it down to- "its got pups" never mind the fact they dont realise how much a nursing dog should be eating.

But they all look great, be a sad day in 6 wks or so for you but :)

Thanks mate :D The milk running not consistently I believe was diue to her being in hospital for those vital couple of days while we had the pups at home on the bottle. Milk supply is good now and Maggie has worked out she can get out and relax in between feeds and puppies dozing for awhile. I put Maggie outside sometimes too to be with her mum and Harley while the pups sleep. Pups are taking longer and more contented naps with full bellies as the milk has reached consitency of quality and supply now. There is no discontented squarking like they arent being fed well enough or anything. maggie is being fed top quality food and costing the earth. She's special and she is made to feel special too.

She wont want to go live outside again when its all over and done with.

Ken is a shocker for wanting pupies and kittens around him..........he is terrible at deciding if someone deserves one of the pups.........or not :)

Not wanting kittens, Tish ( my devon rex ) got speyed a few days back. Ken wasnt too happy about that.
