How Many Budgies?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I'm just after a little bit of advice

I have a patio aviary/cage that is approximately 4ft x 2ft x 1ft and I was wondering how many budgies can be housed in there comfortably?

Thanks :D

6 - 8 sounds cool, I was hoping someone would say that

Another question - what should the ratio of males to females be for that number? I wouldn't want any of them to start fighting.

Oh, and I'll try to get a photo of the aviary/cage soon.

Thanks for your help.

Camera batteries are flat, sorry, so I'm waiting for them to charge.

I can't find hubby's tape measure, but with a ruler I measured that from front to back it is 60cm. From side to side it is 95cm. Standing next to the cage, I would say it is at least 4ft high.

OOps :) I suck with measurements :(

Will be back tomorrow with a photo. I have two budgies in there at the moment, but I'm hoping to get some more.

Here is a picture of the aviary/cage. Sorry about the poor quality, my daughter unplugged the battery charger so I had to use my mobile (don't ask why I didn't think to use my mobile yesterday  )

I know it's bare at the moment, I'm working on it

You would be better off with the perch running from the front of the cage to the back rather than from one side to the other. I would probably add another perch as well, that way the budgies are getting a bit of exercise flying from one perch to the other.

I would say six maximum and no nest boxes.

More perches which you most likely know.

Hard to get at access door eh ?

Raise the whole cage up off the ground some more as its accessible by mice as it is right now.

You can't really see it in the picture, but there is a perch in the top that runs from front to back (in the picture, it's what one of the budgies is sitting on). They're a crazy pair, always playing and flying between the perches, it's lovely to watch (time wasters!) :D

There is another access door towards the top of the cage on the side, again you can't see it in the picture

The cage is coming inside (yay!), hubby suggested it goes in the sun room as it's so cold outside at night.

I should add that I am going to add more perches, I'm getting some natural ones. And I'm also going to get some toys for them, I'm going to try to make them some today. :P
