The youngest female, the runt of the litter that was born with fluid on its lungs was blue and cold at the 3 am feeding. Even just a couple of drops of milk on her tongue was causing bubbles to come out of her nose as with all her earlier feeds. She looked like she would die at 3-4 am. I popped her in my bra ( as I have done to warm baby budgies sometimes ) and let her sleep through with me to the next feeding under the doona. I expected her to die BUT at 7:30 she was warm, coloured up again and active. So I thought I would try feeding her just a drop or two at a time. Again it all came out of her nose and her lungs were still bubbling with fluid.

Bundled them all up and took her back to the vets and demanded they check her over better than they had the last two times I asked them to.

Turns out she was a premmie and an area far back in her throat past the roof of her mouth ( where they check for cleft palates which she didnt have )....into the area of the soft palate....wasnt formed properly and hence she could not feed.

She has been put to sleep............

goodbye little angel...you tried very hard but it was not to be

Maggie is still at the vets and her other pups are there for the day too as I have a work deadline thats driving me more than crazy and have had three days straight with little or no sleep and running back and forth to the vets.

On top of that my devon rex cat Morticia or Tish has come on heat and she is wailing the house down in an effort to be mated. Little does she know she is off to the vets to be desexed tomorrow. Because of her wailing ....there's been more lack of sleep in this house.

I am very sorry about the little one.

I trust that Maggie is doing well and that she will be home soon to nurse her puppies. All the best with Tish and getting your work finished . I wish you a well-earned sleep when you are up to date.

Feeling very overworked and shattered. My husband was to be going to football tonight but he has given his seat to someone else so he can help me finish my work. Once I deliver this job Saturday morning I am taking myself off to bed for the afternoon.

I expect to still bottlefeed some puppies to take the load off Maggie.

Very sad to hear you have lost a couple of those adorable puppies.

You take care Kaz and if you need help just call okay.

oh poor little girl.

you tried your very best kaz, and that is all you could have done for it

it is obvious that you care and love your animals very very much, good on you!

the other 7 will be a fantastic experience, good luck with your cat too.

Maggie and her puppies are home again. Maggie is looking real good. She is on antibiotics and she is allowed to be feeding her puppies.

I'm sorry to hear about little Moo.

As we all know, the occasional loss is all part of the breeding process. Sad, but inevitable. On the bright side, a litter of 7 will take much less toll on Maggie than a litter of 10. Kaz, you and Maggie will have to make sure you get your rest, and keep up your strength. I hope all goes well with this leadlight project.

I've been thinking about what you said about the owner of the stud dog not witnessing any ties. I think you mentioned she just had them together in a run for a few days. My guess is that she wasn't very observant, and she missed a number of ties over that period. (Who knows, maybe all the ties were at night.) That would account for some of the puppies being more premature- they were conceived a few days later and didn't have as much time to grow. Just how long was Maggie at the breeder's?

Then theoretically, the youngest puppy could have been 10 days younger than the oldest!

Although, it probably it would have taken Maggie at least a day or two to accept his advances.

But even 7 or 8 days, the youngest would be too premature.

Most breeders wouldn't allow the matings to continue over that many days, for this reason.

Since your breeder didn't think they were mating at all, she probably didn't think it was too much time.

It's just like with budgies, though. Just because you don't see anything does not mean they are not mating when you are not looking. :D

Well, I hope everything goes smoothly from here on out.

They sure are really cute! :star:

Hayden if you ever get a chance to have a dog.........Cavaliers are excellent family dogs. We havent named the pups exactly because they wont be ours to keep. We give them temporary names so we can recognise them though.
Congratulations, Kaz!!So sorry to hear about the last little one. :(Hope you get some well-deserved rest this weekend.
I had to work today to finish a job. The client is happy so thats the main thing :star: Tomorrow is all mine :D

Oh Karen, congratulations on the arrival of Maggie's beautiful pups. Congratulations to Maggie on a job well done, especially as she is a first time mum. :star: What a champion she is!

I have been reading through this journey of Maggie's and everytime I have tried to reply I have been interrupted or had to leave.

I am so very sorry for the loss of the youngest little girl, as well as for the two unborn puppies. :D A shame that not all managed to survive, but at the same time it would be a relief to Maggie - nursing 7 gorgeous beautiful little puppies would be so much easier than trying to nurse 10. It means taking the stress off Maggie AND yourself - as I'm sure you'd have had to be surrogate mother to the last few puppies - just like you have been whilst Maggie has been recovering.

It's sooo very exciting and I am so happy these little "cows" are doing so well (if you ask my daughter - she will tell you they are tiny black and white cows HAHAHAHA   )

I hope you are resting up now - if you need any help, please let me know - I will be glad to

So sorry to hear about the little one, poor little pet.

But the others are looking fabulous and Maggie as well.

Good luck...and get some rest :D
