Posted May 11, 201015 yr I'm going to my very first budgerigar club meeting tonight. I have no idea what to expect, its very exciting. I've been waiting for about a month now, as the meeting is only every second tuesday of every month ( I only found that out the day after the second tuesday of april ) Anyone have any tips for a noob meeting goer like me?
May 11, 201015 yr have fun!!! and asks questions, dont be afraid. im sure they will be nice =] you can find out if any members use this site!!! you could use that as a point of conversation ! ps: maddy you havnt replied to my pm i sent you... i think ?
May 12, 201015 yr Author Well, I think my first go at a meeting was a big success I knew I was in the right place because I could hear the budgies from across the street. When I got in there, someone close to the door immediately didn't recognise me and gave me a big welcome He took me around to see the budgies that had been brought in to table judge. After signing the book I went over to the birds again, while they were being judged. The judge (who also happens to be a avian supplier YAY) was telling me the whole way through what he was looking for and why some birds came first and why others lost. There was a big commotion when one of the birds was spotted with a red and blue ring on lol  After that I had a look over some of the things the judge sells and we had a talk about budgie breeding. Pretty soon I had a little group discussion going, all different members giving me tips and advice for starting out. It was fantastic. They were all really helpful and nice. The avian supplier even gave me the number of someone close to me who is selling a set of breeding boxes for $40 So if anything this meeting has gotten me more interested. Oh and Alpaca-boy, I did reply....maybe it got lost?
May 12, 201015 yr yay your meeting was good! they sound really nice. that was nice of the judge to explain what he was looking for to you so was there a competition on that night?? oh. okay  my pm inbox says 0?? maybe it got lost in the system oh well. glad you had a good time. did you see any nice birds you liked??
May 12, 201015 yr Author Well there was a beautiful albino hen there...it wouldn't shut up though lol they had to put the show cage face to the back of another cage so it would be quiet. I liked the lacewings they had too, very nice. It was just a table judge, so the members brought in their birds to be compared to the other ones. A pretty normal cobalt won for that night
May 12, 201015 yr oh cool, i see. and ps i like your new siggy. how did you get the speech bubble? oh and i found the message... silly me, i must have opened it and forgot about it. i will reply soon
May 13, 201015 yr Hey maddy I was going through an old topic and discovered this POST that was me going to my first budgie club meeting as well July 2006 Just got back from my first Budgerigar Club meeting. It went for 3 hours. A very large club. They held a bench show with dozens of budgies brought in by members....judged and presented awards at the end of the night. There was a lecture on what they look for in judging budgerigars....with real examples and literature. I learnt that one of the most valuable budgies to have in your aviary is an olive like Radar, due to his very versatile dark factor that can be so useful in breeding dark greens, blues and violets. They have a great library of books and video for free borrowing and also a shop to buy birdie requirements and medicines at much cheaper prices than pet shops and vets. I enjoyed my first evening there and I am now a fully paid up member of this club. This Sunday I get to pick from some show birds a member is cullling from his aviary. cheers kaz
May 16, 201014 yr Hi Maddy , Im glad you enjoyed your first meeting and had some fun . Our club is friendly and helpful so I hope to see you back again soon . Remember take your time and enjoy the birds while your starting up . Ps, Congrats on the new job. Matt.
May 16, 201014 yr Author I'm sure that took you back Kaz It sounds so similar to my first time at one And yes Matt it was great, I will be back next meeting. I am taking my time, my plan is to slowly stockpile the things I need so that I'm not buying it all at once. The next thing on my list is a small aviary And thanks I mostly took it to build up my funds for breeding, as I'm more than likely to run into a wall or two when I start up
