Just wondering if it's too cold for an indoor budgie to move outside to an aviary when it gets down to 15 at night? Still nice and warm during the day...

Lol, 15 degrees balmy! I moved my indoor budgies outside in August in a Tasmanian winter... they survived the sub 5 degree nights quite easily.

it will depend on body condition. if your indoor budgie is used to being warm and sheltered, then they wont have as much fat as the outside birds. If your budgie feels nice and solid in your hand, then it should be okay.

i would regulate it slowly start by putting in laundry at night where cooler

then slowly open window you can whatch then for sudden changes in it

Temperatures outside and the changes will all depend on what temperatures and conditions they have had inside. Moving birds outside bordering on winter is not necessarily a good idea unless you can be certain the temperature change isnt drastic.

Why have you left it till now to move them...why not a few months earlier so they could acclimatise ?

Because I had 2 birds in the aviary, then one had to be euthanised and the remaining one is quite lonely, so I thought I would move the indoor ones outside to keep it company. But if it's a bad idea then obviously I'm not gonna do it.

I am not familiar with brisbane temps, so it would have to be your choice based on knowledge of your weather conditions and what the birds have had inside the house. Noone can judgie really.

Well, 15 is about as cold as it will get all winter, it will be about 23 during the day, and the aviary is pretty sheltered, no wind or anything like that, and the house would be nearly as cold anyway... I'll feel them and if they are nice and fat I might just put them out...

Sounds like a good decision and well thought out. I always add extra oats to their seed during winter ( to fatten em up against the chills :rofl: )

15 is pretty warm for night temps the problem isnt the temp as much as drafts. If the aviary is sheltered from winds and draft and rain where they can be cosy then they should be okay, but if they are used to say 20c plus at night indoors I would aclimatise them over a week, as was suggested. Outdoor air at night even a few degrees difference is different to indoor air, it tends to be damper outside aswell with the dew falling so make sure it is dry and sheltered.
