Chicks With Tumors

Hi all,

We currently have a pair with five chicks, the last of which hatched today. There were six eggs in the clutch and all of them hatched. The eldest baby was six days old when I noticed that it had a yellowish lump in "in" its crop. The chick died at nine days old but hadn't grown since it was six days old.

When it died I noticed that its organs seemed to have been bleeding but this only happened in its last day (you know how their skin is see through and you can see their insides).

I can remember having another chick with the same sort of thing about two years ago and I was wondering what could have caused it. The parents are not related and this is the hen's first clutch. (The parents weren't related the other time either).

Has anyone else had this in any of their chicks? I can't see anything wrong with the other babies at the moment and last time it was only one baby in a clutch of five.

i had a chick that couldnt swollow once something blocked its gullet

i dont know what i couldnt even feed myself so.... im sorry i cant help ive never had it again

Sounds strange SunshineE,

Do you think parents could have "overfed" or been to rough with their feeding and ruptured something? It may have had a blockage in it's crop and no food could get passed, which I'd say without food for 3 days or so, if it stopped growing maybe it starved, it wouldn't take long for a young chick. I hope someone else has seen this in case any of us come across it.

Good luck with rest of clutch and keep us posted if you find out what caused the first death. :laughter:

Sounds more like malformation than a tumour to me, but it could be anything really. We got the odd chick or two that hasnt got all its working parts as they should be. Percentage wise we dont often get these kind of things happening and when we do, we just take it in our stride.
