My Budgies Are Sick.

Featured Replies

Posted

I have had a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach this week and now I know why. 5/6 of my budgies are sick. I found 4 huddled at the bottom of the cage. Could the sudden change in the weather have anything to do with it? They are in the hospital cage with 2 hotwater bottles and a heat lamp. Thimble looks so weak.... I don't know what to do. We have no avian vet and the normal ones are full. I am just so shocked, they were fine this morning. :)

what was the approx. temperature today down your way???

if it was cold, maybe the did freeze a little, and are still cold, keep them warm, and bring the other one in side

just incas this is the reason.

wait a day or so and if they still seem sick, then you will have to take them to the vet.

try and make a booking ahead of time, to prevent having to wait.

let us know how it goes, ps it is a bit hard to diagnose there problem over the net, so maybe the best thing to do

is to get them proffessionally checked.

pictures might help??

is there any other sypmtoms?

hudling usually means they are cold and are trying to keep warm, by body heat from one another.

good luck ratzy.

Thank you. They are doing much better in the hospital cage. Lexi ( one not showing sypmtoms) was not struck down because I took her in to school. Honestly, I thought Thimble wouldn't make it this far but she is pulling through. I'll try and get some pics but I don't want to stress them. I checked the newspaper on the bottom of the cage and there is some brown stuff, but that could be from me adding new foods. Mostly it is normal. Lexi is in a tiny cage next to the hospital cage.

EDIT: Temperature suddenly dropped from 25 to 12 degrees in the past few days.

i dont know what you set up is like but i know my set up is quiet free from draft i even took candles in to see how draft proof it is as i was told by vets my birds are dieing from draft related pneoumnia their is no draft

acording to candles and it was blowing a gail my frount door security one blew off ripped wooden frame off it was that strong

still no draft flames did not flicker anywhere i walked the whole aviry how ever thats what autopsy showed up

so ?????

birds were not in it when i did this

birds can be fine one day and sick as the next but

..... if all 5 of 6 birds are sick at once then im thinking you have something more than a cold mate

you really really need to find out what it is

vets do samples through the post so you could easy send a poo sample

over night delivery

heat will help but keep liquards up also

no greens

seed only

try putting some rock salt in a small dish if they want they can take it

also i like to put rearing mix in hospital cage too incase bird doesnt feel like eatting

fill whole cage with seed on floor so they can just put head down and eat if they not to good

having to get to dish may make diffrents to weather they eat or not

good luck

and keep really warm

but im afraid you really need to get to a vet or at least get vet to sample poo and or crop

dont have other bird in same room as if it is air born it too will become ill

wash hands thourouly before handeling any birds that are not in sick cage

and tend to sick birds last not before healthy birds

please keep us updated

They are looking much better apart from Thimble, who I'm really worried about as she has regurgitated whole seed. They are really warm. My set up is quite drafty, but dad got me something for that today. I am terrified, as I read up on Megabacteria and then Thimble has regurgitated whole seeds. We have no avian vets within 2 hours, and I have school. The normal vet is full until Monday.

this could be just stress

did she just regergatate or shake head and flung seed everywhere their is a diffrence

did you read what i said about posting poo in mail ?????

if i was you id take her out and away from other four and keep seperate yet again

they may have chance but she may make them worst if stays in their

as i said 5 at once more than cold

She both regurgitated and flung seed around. I don't know where to send the poo in the mail. What could it be?

Megabacteria is a secondary illness that kicks in after other diseases or illnesses have been at play. Reading up on things and self diagnosing may steer you wrong and you are doing yourself no favours by talking yourself into things that dont fit. Time you found a real avian vet. Advise your suburb and state and we can point you at an avian vet where possible.

Apart from draughts and cold.................

Damp or rain ?

Access by mice ?

ive read you can give them electrolytes in their water to give them some energy*the stuff in Gatorade* anyone else done this

Amy, do they do interstate? Houman, I've read that that stuff has too much salt in it. They are all doing well. While I was at school mum moved them outside as she did not believe me ( that they were sick ) as they weren't fluffed up because they were under a heat lamp. They are back inside. I watered them with a suringe, it went well. All I did was squeese a little drop out and put it near their beaks. Off topic here- I attempted to make Marigold a foot brace as the swelling went down but she doesn't use it much. The vet is free on Monday so..... Hopefully they will be ALL going. Apparently they do a bit with birds there, YES! :hmm:

They look pretty normal, but I'm wary. While I was at school Thimble choked up more seeds, I found them on the bottom of the cage, covered with slime. Could I put sugar or something in their water to give them a boost like Houman said?

i dont know. i read it in a book but i dunnu some stuff it said in it was kind of how can i put it *wrong*

i would give them apple cider vinegar in their water while you wait for the vet. I have found it good for settling their vomiting.

gloucose or sugur can increase thebacteria by feeding it

but on other hd can givestrength

i wouldnt

black tea week will healp heaps

gloucose or sugur can increase thebacteria by feeding it

i didnt even think of that

i only learnt by doing it myself

it wasnt till later when i was told its actually not good

i didnt think about the bacteria growing rampard from ithe sugur

I am still in shock. I have been reading up on illnesses.
I'm on/off on this forum and saw this thread.

Here is what a expert budgie breeder from the U.K. has written on this subject.

Vomiting by throwing food out of the crop is not unusual and there are a number of causes, the first cause is a chill and warmth and isolation must be offered immediately. The bird will try and get rid of accumulating mucus in the throat and seeds fly out and gather in little clusters. These can be seen on the cage floors or the cage wires.Vomiting is common in pet birds and can be a sign of disease or courtship.

The vomiting bird may show one or more of the following symptoms Weakness -Lethargic and fluffed. Sometimes they will seizure - Pass watery green droppings.

Disease causing vomiting in birds

Infectious disease - which includes bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic disease - Metabolic disease– e.g. enlarged Thyroid , liver disease, peritonitis -Nutritional cause e.g. high protein diets. - Toxicity– Heavy metal toxicity (Zinc and lead are most common), plant toxicities; Physical obstructions – e.g. foreign body in the crop, overfeeding, tumours - Trauma especially crop burn - Allergic – food; Behavioral– usually not pathological e.g. courtship behavior, cromilk feeding in pigeons Cancer– causing nausea and obstructions; Iatrogenic / caused by treatments– from drugs especially doxycycline, nitoimadazoles ; Other – e.g. motion sickness when traveling to vets or shows. A more common syndrome is that of low level poisoning. The most common causes of a vomiting budgie are Trichomoniasis, Megabacteria,Heavy metal poisoning and after receiving certain medications....

This site also has other subjects such as how to care for a sick bird. I hope it's okay to reference another website?? I so hope your babes get better. :hmm:

Hi. My bubs are sooo much better! Mum and Dad made me put them outside as they didn't think they were sick anymore. Glad to say Thimble has not vomited since yesterday. I have plastic over the cage, which traps they warm air and mostly keeps out the cold.

Amy, do they do interstate?

Heya Ratzy, sorry for the late reply. I've had my internet down the last two days.

Yes Vetafarm do interstate - they are in Wagga and I've used them (I'm in WA) and I know one of my friends in Victoria used used them too :D They are very helpful. I see you have said your babies seem better - that's great news. Hopefully they stay on the mend - but you could always do a droppings sample as a precaution  It may tell you what was wrong with them.

ive read you can give them electrolytes in their water to give them some energy*the stuff in Gatorade* anyone else done this

Houman, I think it's called Spark Liquid (a Vetafarm product) - it has electrolytes in it
