Dead Baby

Featured Replies

Hi,

Well I've had more bad luck with the hen that didn't feed a newly hatched egg yesterday, thanks to Kaz that is now all okay.

Checked this morning - only 3 eggs - checked when I got home, 1 dead baby, again no sign of shell.....

I cupped baby in my hands for 20 mins breathing warm air, kind of knew there was no hope but wanted to try anyway... :emoticon112:

Is this yellow belly? If it is have I done something wrong?? or has something else happened?

What do I do with the remaining 2 eggs, do I foster? She is a first time mother and at the moment I don't trust her with the next hatchling.....

Leave them and watch her. She has to learn sometime how to be a mother. If she fails, act then.

Definitely yellow belly. You can tell the chick hatched around a day early. As Kaz said, definitely not your fault. Can sometimes be a hen that is too eager and eats the shell long before the chick has fully broken out. Normally the chick takes about 18-24 hours to break a hole at which point the hen picks up the egg by the hole and starts eating the egg shell, releasing the chick who during the last 18-24 hours absorbed the remaining yolk. If a hen is too eager and pierces the egg too soon after the chick first starts peeping and tapping the shell it will die from yellow belly. Premature =/

When a chick has yellow belly it is a salmonalla infection and the hen usually will not feed it and it dies.

Well new chickie (Kaz) was very weak and cold this morning with no food in belly or crop.... :( Hen was out of the box trying to escape the cage....there seemed to be regurgitated food in the nest but none for baby....I have fostered her and the remaining egg this morning, thats IT for that hen...I removed them to a holding cage for a week or so and then I will put her back in the avairy....NEVER to breed again.... :) I hope little Kazzy makes it.......... :( Will check her throughout the day....

Splat....does that mean the egg was bad? Or the hen ate something bad when the egg was developing.....? How can they get salmonella when they have'nt eaten anything? Isn't that llike food poisoning?

I have fostered to nests with eggs before quite successfully. Choose a nest where eggs are due the soonest.

Hi Anne I believe parents pass it on to the young, but the second one looks good so don't worry. I hope the little one makes it what a big job trying to feed it, good luck :)

i didnt think looked to well very pale splat

not pink

how do you cure the mum or dad splat can i ask

anne good luck kaz right i have fostered to nest about to have eggs due in few days

a broadspectrum antibiotic.

Baytril is a good treatment for the whole when there is yellow belly present and Moxy-T is for individual nest ect. both products from Rob Marshell. BUT any broadspectrum antibiotic will do, like vetafarm triple c will do and is available in some pet shops and ocy B which is also more readily available.

Hi splat, can yellow belly be passed from cage to cage or is it individual parent's that may pass it on?Would you treat all birds or just infected nest? :hmm:
