Posted April 27, 201015 yr Hi, Well I've had more bad luck with the hen that didn't feed a newly hatched egg yesterday, thanks to Kaz that is now all okay. Checked this morning - only 3 eggs - checked when I got home, 1 dead baby, again no sign of shell..... I cupped baby in my hands for 20 mins breathing warm air, kind of knew there was no hope but wanted to try anyway... :emoticon112: Is this yellow belly? If it is have I done something wrong?? or has something else happened? What do I do with the remaining 2 eggs, do I foster? She is a first time mother and at the moment I don't trust her with the next hatchling.....
April 27, 201015 yr Yes, but also a chick hatched too early can look like that. One thing for certain........... not your fault.
April 27, 201015 yr looks yellow to me so i would say yes. but i dont have a clue what yellow belly is so...

April 27, 201015 yr Definitely yellow belly. You can tell the chick hatched around a day early. As Kaz said, definitely not your fault. Can sometimes be a hen that is too eager and eats the shell long before the chick has fully broken out. Normally the chick takes about 18-24 hours to break a hole at which point the hen picks up the egg by the hole and starts eating the egg shell, releasing the chick who during the last 18-24 hours absorbed the remaining yolk. If a hen is too eager and pierces the egg too soon after the chick first starts peeping and tapping the shell it will die from yellow belly. Premature =/

April 28, 201015 yr When a chick has yellow belly it is a salmonalla infection and the hen usually will not feed it and it dies.
April 28, 201015 yr Author Well new chickie (Kaz) was very weak and cold this morning with no food in belly or crop.... Hen was out of the box trying to escape the cage....there seemed to be regurgitated food in the nest but none for baby....I have fostered her and the remaining egg this morning, thats IT for that hen...I removed them to a holding cage for a week or so and then I will put her back in the avairy....NEVER to breed again.... I hope little Kazzy makes it.......... Will check her throughout the day.... When a chick has yellow belly it is a salmonalla infection and the hen usually will not feed it and it dies.Splat....does that mean the egg was bad? Or the hen ate something bad when the egg was developing.....? How can they get salmonella when they have'nt eaten anything? Isn't that llike food poisoning?
April 29, 201015 yr Author Picture of Kaz before I fostered her this morning...... Before I fed her..... After I fed her with the end of a toothpick...
April 29, 201015 yr Author Checked this morning.....not fed I bought her in and fed her again until her crop was full... It is the only other foster nest I have with chicks...the others are still eggs..... What do I do? keep feeding her? I am at work today til 4 so I hope she makes it though the day....

Choose a nest where eggs are due the soonest. Edited April 30, 201015 yr by KAZ
April 30, 201015 yr Hi Anne I believe parents pass it on to the young, but the second one looks good so don't worry. I hope the little one makes it what a big job trying to feed it, good luck

April 30, 201015 yr a broadspectrum antibiotic. Baytril is a good treatment for the whole when there is yellow belly present and Moxy-T is for individual nest ect. both products from Rob Marshell. BUT any broadspectrum antibiotic will do, like vetafarm triple c will do and is available in some pet shops and ocy B which is also more readily available.
