some doubts about one of the young babies

Hello all;

how is everyone here ? I hope all people are fine and having fun.

Well, I am having some starnge point here.

I had my first hatch weeks ago... I had four babies, and they are growing pretty fast i guess, at least for the last week. you can find more of the babies pictures with dates in this thread

http://www.daves-forums.co.uk/bbc/index.php?showtopic=2794

my question here is that i have recognized that one of the babies is doing very slow progress??!!!! other babies had developed feathers and size more quicker than he did and he still did not have many feathers while his brothers did. by the way , 2 babies hatched the same day and after 2 days the other two hatched.

I am guessing that he might not be getting as much food as other and so they are kicking him aside while food :glare:

Any comments please??!!!!!

am so confused as well as worried.

Thank you all and have a nice day.

Hmmmm im not much help but i would say its because he isnt getting as much food as the others, but should survive...I have had this happen many times before, the more healthier and stronger ones push in therefore get more. They are saught of classified as 'the runt' of the batch.

They sometimes just grow up 'smaller' than the others and are always a small bird, but some still do grow to full size.

Maybe if its really worrying you, youcould try giving him some help by feeding him yourself??

Although by looking at the piccies it looks healthy, just younger maybe..., (im guessing its the one with not much feathers)

Hope that helped a bit :glare: Goodluck

well luckys Gal,

thank you for the hint. if you just can give me more hints on how would i do a hand feeding thing ?????? never did it before :glare:

There's usually a runt in my birds clutches. Usually the littlest babies, but they've all survived and grown to normal size. :)

Hello all,

i was just looking for anything about hand feeding budgies but could not find anything really usefull. except the link provided by DAZ. thank you alot........

but still have several quetions.

what is the mixture used for hand feeding, taking in mind that here in Egypt we do not have much of available specialized budgies stuff............ is there any mixture that i can do at home and use...

the second question is ..... since i have one chick is going out of the nest box and the other standing at the door of the nest box the others still young inside, i have noticed that the original cock and hen are starting to mating again :o

mmmm i have read that the second round starts in about 4-5 weeks of the first one and the hen might be forced to kick out the small chicks from the nest.

does anyone advice to separate the hen from the cage ??????

any comments.

Thank you.

have a nice day :)

Are there any commercially prepared formulas you can get there? If the parents are able and do feed the babies, I would let them instead of trying to handfeed. There is really no reason to handfeed baby budgies unless the parents are not doing a proper job of it. If you still need a handfeeding formula, I will help you with your search. Let me know.

*edit* forgot to answer your question about the hen.

If you don't want another clutch of babies, then you can seperate the hen from the rest of the brood. The male should feed them.

I agree with Luckys Gal. I think it's getting enough food to live but not enough to grow at a normal rate. I raise exotic show pigeons and I have this happen from time to time and most of the time the bird lives and makes it out of the nest and weans so it's able to eat as much as it wants and then you see a growth spurt.
