May 1, 201015 yr Her body is fighting the mites off. Keep her warm. She might be struggling with multiple illnesses.
May 1, 201015 yr Author Thank you Dave....I spoon fed her some water and she took it....I'm praying she makes it....
May 1, 201015 yr sorry to read this. You did your best. Sometimes we help, but their life has been tough, and it is just too much for them. Sorry for your loss.
May 1, 201015 yr Author Thanks everyone.... I think your right Dave, her life was just too tough... but it makes me so angry that people let them get this bad....It's not only birds, any animal - they need to be strung up....I just hope one day they get what they deserve... :fingerscrossed: I'm wondering if it was the mites that eventually took her life..as 2 toes on her left foot dropped off when she was at her worst yesterday, no blood and it was the half the toe, not just the nail......her right eye closed over all black and very watery..... Why when she seemed to improve so much then went downhill really quickly, the other 2 are showing no signs on being ill......
May 2, 201015 yr I read an article in the newspaper about a cockatoo who will never be able to fly because the owner purposely cut through the elbow to ground it. It was kept in a cockatiels cage. There was a picture of 'Aussie' with his wing stretched out and half the wing was still attatched. Who ever did that to the poor bird then got rid of it needs to be turned into a bird then go through the same thing. I hate people who are cruel to animals... if they didn't like them then don't keep them as pets.
May 29, 201014 yr Author It's 6 weeks next weekend since these 2 guys have been in quarantine, I'm thinking of putting them in the avairy next weekend - they are 100% better with the scaleyface they had and are showing no sign of illness. I was more worried about the cause of death of my green hen, as the 2 boy's used to feed her. I have come to the conclusion that the mites killed her, I thought maybe she had other illnesses but if the other 2 boys have not been effected - (they were both constantly feeding her, maybe they knew she was ill) then I'm thinking the mites.....?? Some might think me a little naive but I never would have thought that scaley mites could kill a budgie....But then I have never seen them as bad as how she had them either.... R.I.P my sweet girl at least your death has made me realize how serious it can be.... Edited May 29, 201014 yr by anne101
May 29, 201014 yr Mites can kill a budgie, in many ways. You say her toes dropped off? That may well be due to the mites getting under her skin, so when they were killed, there was nothing really left to hold the toes on. I have seen this with nails, and I imagine the toes would be the next step up from that. Mites with birds with rings, cen get in under the rings and cause problems there, leading to infections as well. The mites can initially be the problem, but they provide an oportunity for infection to occur. If you have been treating the other two, they ahve been quarantined for 6 weeks, I think you have done well. We are not there so we cannot offer you the 100% correct advice on how you proceed, but it sounds to me like you have done everything right, and the next natural step is introduing them to your flock. Well done on all your effort. Alway sad losing a bird, especially a nice hen who seemed to be recoering well, but you did what you could, providing a better opportunity for life than she had in the shop. She was too far gone it seems. I look forward to pics of the two boys in the aviary with your others.
