April 16, 201015 yr Author Thanks kaz... just a bit of info for all us wa folk who would like purchase birds at a auction but never have... And are unsure if it is a good auction where the good breeders go... ... I think this info would help us all specialy if we don't know someone who can check the birds for us first...
April 16, 201015 yr I have bought from auctions over east with the help of people I know through here. Once I bought birds I hadnt seen based on ther write up in the catalogue with noone to check for me...........wasnt happy with those birds, but definitely happy with birds I saw by photo first and got checked by a friend who bid for them for me. It has worked out well so far. BUT I also would like to hear from those who live over that way as to what auctions they see as being the good ones
April 17, 201015 yr You can check the Budgerigar Coucil of Victoria web site for upcoming Auctions. I can tell you I have enjoyed and bought quality birds at the Melton auction, not cheep mind you, but good birds. I think as Victoria has such a great record at the national show, we get a lot of bidders from interstate. I personally prefer to visit breeders and buy birds that way, but it seems auctions are the flavour of the month. Whether they are good for the hobby or not, I guess that's another thread. Cheers Clearwing

I have heard there are some that boost the prices of their birds by a network of friends helping bid the birds up too :bluebudgie: Edited April 17, 201015 yr by KAZ
April 17, 201015 yr I had help with my two hens I got from the BRASEA auction. I chose them and then they got looked over and I was told I would be happy with the girls - they are very pretty and I am indeed happy with them. okay maybe my little yellow face needed a bit of TLC but that may have been due to a)the breeder (highly unlikely but is possible) :bluebudgie: stress from being at the auction c) the huge amount of travel the poor girl had to endure - Sydney to Perth to Tom Price back to Perth as there was a mix up with her and another YF. d) all of the above. e) something completely different. I am happy with this auction, also with the communication and feed back and help I received throughout the weeks before and after the event. My hens were cheap - one was $80 and the other was $60. I had set aside $150 to only buy one quality bird but instead managed to get two which I think was quite good. okay so I haven't actually BEEN to an Eastern States Auction, but hey I still managed to buy some birds

April 17, 201015 yr The dearest is easily the Hills Auction. Birds there go fopr multiple thousands of dollars. I will go to the next one, but I will be wearing a straight jacket to avoid any accidental bidding. BRASEA auctions are held in March and October. Birds are of a good quality and a reasonable price. These are the big auctions in terms of numbers, with over 400 birds up for auction. Birds go for as cheap as $20 and go upto $1 or $2000. I have never been to any other auctions, but that may change sooner than I could well imagine.

April 17, 201015 yr There are 3 main Auctions in S Qld. Thew Wynnum Action just held BRASEA in June/July and the Pine Rivers Auction in August/Sept. We are working on an Auction just before Christmas for the SQBBA. I have mixed feelings about the auctions. They are a good place to go to see a broad collection of birds. ie from $50 to $4500 but I believe the best buys are directly from the breeders. You get a good bird at a good price and time to talk and see the related stock from the bird you want to buy.
April 18, 201015 yr i dont know if im eastern :bluebudgie: district but... our clubs auction is quiet good ,... its in june im pretty sure birds are very reasonably priced for people like me who dont have a lot of money to spend on big bids and not so reasonably priced if you want to push the bid up for a certain bird i was very very pleased with my birds and not one over 50.00 my cheapest was 30.00 for a really nice violet green yf cock from the borg and skivington stud , he has produced me some fantastic chicks all the birds i got were 08 rung i also got my beautiful full blood brothers an albino and his grey / brother the fathers to my beautiful albino chicks i guess it depends on who wants the bird really as to how much they go for as i was suprized i got my albino so cheep as the other ones went for much more from same breeder and hes got great bloodlines too my auction birds have turned out to be some the best birds in my flight ive culled a few times now and gotten rid of birds ive payed breeder top dollor for and my auction birds well im still very happy with and are my foundation so far to my best chicks produced infact if i had of saved the 500.00 dollors i spent on 7 birds i could have walked away with either two really good pairs or 5 to 7 still good birds from some of the top studs around we have like most other auctions interstate breeders and local last year we had birds from all over it was a great day everyone was friendly and willing to help me out and i met some my new bird related friends their i had no clue what i was doing and was helped with everything from recognizing a good bird and to when to put up my little thinggy (number ) their was lots of phone bids also i was helped by some of the people whom i never even dreamed id touch base with i hear this years going to be just as good if not better sounds to me like its going to be better all in all it was a great experience and a really enjoyable day
