April 16, 201015 yr Well the cage is big enough for the birds, I'm sure other can give you more tips on changes for it if needed... You have a skyblue normal male and a pied hen of some sorts there... So yes a male and female... Welcome to the forum Cadman...
April 16, 201015 yr Author thanks for that i thought i had 2 males ive had them for 2 weeks can any one tell me how long before they breed i seen them kissing and the male bird singing his head off and when hes doing this he goes right up to the female bird and pecks her a bit is that normal?
April 16, 201015 yr When the hen and male are in breeding condition they will breed, female light to medium brown coloured cere (the bit about the beak) and the male will have a nice deep blue coloured cere... The tapping of the beaks and jumping & bobbing on the perch by the male is normal, its his way of getting her interested in breeding...
April 17, 201015 yr Hi, welcome We have a whole section on breeding budgies. There is alot of information there Link.
April 17, 201015 yr Is the hen going into the nestbox? What do you have at the bottom of the nestbox? It's definately a male and female... Welcome to the forum
April 17, 201015 yr Author i have nothing at the moment in the breeding box.should i have something in there? i was outside today and i seen the hen go in the box for the 1st time it was good to see and the male was whisleing his had off once agian....
April 17, 201015 yr Don't rush it. it will take a while for the hen to get used to the idea of the breeding box, for them to mate, then for an egg to be layed. You think that is bad, it takes 18 days form when the hen first sits on the eggs until the egg hatches. That 18 days seems like forever to us novice breeders. Patience my friend. If it is mean to happen, it will. Have you put some wood shavings in the bottom of the box or anything. One of the signs that my hens are getting ready to lay eggs is that they "prepare" the nest, usually by throwing out or rearranging the shavings.
April 21, 201015 yr Hi. I also got woodshavings from a timber yard. Just make sure they are NOT treated pine shavings. Also that they are not mixed with treated stuff.
April 22, 201015 yr Welcome Your birds are very beautiful, especially the hen. I hear that rolled oats are also good for the bottom of the nest box
