Hens Died :(

What have I done wrong !!!!??????? :)

I got home from work and checked my birds....one of my hens in the breeding cabinet has died....

She seemed fine, seemed healthy and active and eating and in good condition.......???????

She had 4 eggs, one was broken so I disposed of it, the other three seem okay, not sure if fertile?

Do I foster these eggs?? I have 4 other nests available....if I do can I mark the eggs so I know which is what??

She started to incubate them on the weekend, Im not sure how many hours since she passed away, the last time I checked was last night, she was in the box and all was well...... :D

Was she carrying another egg ? Did she look and act well ? Sometimes when a hen is incubating we miss things becuase they are in there doing their own thing as we expect and these things just happen :)

She was ringed "08, a YF Violet I purchased off DrNat last year...........

* Healthy looking and active

* chewing and flirting

* I handle them to make sure they feel "solid"

* I had her in the breeding box for 2 weeks on her own, fresh veg every day, ( a mix of carrot, peas, corn, small amount of cucumber, beans) and egg and biscuit (wet) twice a week.

* She had a iodine block.

* fresh millett every other day in the nesting box

* Fresh water every morning

* Fresh seed daily

* change of newspaper daily (Due to big poo's)

She "seemed" fine.........but obviously I'm missing/ not noticing something.....

Spider bite...? Something scare her...?

I'm so sorry to hear Anne... :) A lose of any hen is not fair...

LB2005, We do get a lot of Redbacks but I doubt it....I will have a look though....

Foster if you can Anne... Do you have other hens down...?

Agreed :)

Sorry you lost your hen Anne, but don't blame yourself, sounds like you've done everything and more. I had one fly into aviary from flight give a couple of squarks and she was dead on the floor, a beautiful opaline spangle 2 yrs old. Just put it down to mother nature, she can be a b.... at times. Good luck with your eggs you may still get something of her with luck. :D

Yes I did Kaz.....
Oh no Anne... I hope something good comes off the eggs... :P I hope they weren't cold for too long...
Me to Steph.....

I had a situation once where the eggs were stone cold for hours halfway through incubation. I fostered them anyway and half the chicks survived even though the temperature was really really fridge cold on the eggs when I found them.
