Posted April 14, 201015 yr Is it okay to put some pairs down for breeding or is it getting too cold? Temp at the moment min 16 max 26. I live in Maleny QLD. Cheers, Geoff
April 14, 201015 yr I know some breeders here in WA have stopped breeding as it does get a bit chilly now that winter is here... But some breeders breed during winter and stop for the hottest part of the year, Nov-Jan... I guess it depands on what you are more comfortable with and what you think is best for your birds...
April 14, 201015 yr Depends a lot on your conditions in breeding room etc, and temperature range where you are.
April 14, 201015 yr Author Thanks I'll always put the birds health first, so do you think it would be wise to or not?
April 14, 201015 yr Thanks I'll always put the birds health first, so do you think it would be wise to or not? Since you havent advised your setup ( breeding room ) temperatures and I dont live where you do, I cannot advise you. Suggest you seek advice from those breeders in your area and what they do. Whats your breeding area/room like ? Is it insulated etc ? Most breeders advise not breeding during April, saying thats the birds biggest annual moult. Edited April 14, 201015 yr by KAZ
April 14, 201015 yr My birds are all moulting, so I will not put any down to breed right now until they finish their moult. My breeding room is not too cold in winter, so i might breed some after they have finished their moult. I will probably wait until the worst of the winter weather is over though
April 14, 201015 yr Author Kaz my breeding room is a converted bird aviary which is gal I have added a see through tarp off a hot house to the out side wire, my flight is 3m X 3m made by me out of timber and it's just about fully inclosed, I might just put some pairs in breeding cages to bond over the winter and then when it warms up introduce the nesting boxes, do you think this will be okay? Geoff

Cheers, Geoff Hi Taboo, given the temperatures you're talking about and if the birds are in breeding condition, it may be a very good time to breed. The thing is the breeding season must be determined by the birds and varies in different climates. I suggest you contact your nearest club and ask some of the local members. Or, put some down as a learning experience. Cheers Clearwing
April 14, 201015 yr Whilst a lot of my birds are moulting the others arent, so I am breeding right now, be it only half the cabinets. AND in similar temperatures to yours. Edited April 14, 201015 yr by KAZ
April 14, 201015 yr Sydney weather is good for breeding all year round, as long as it is indoors. Though summers lately have had some 1 off hot days. I would think that the weather in QLD would allow you to breed all year round. That is just a guess. Maybe not the middle of summer.
April 26, 201015 yr So Kaz, does that mean that its really up to the birds whether it is the right time to breed? Do they go into breeding condition only when they deem the weather appropriate to do so?
April 26, 201015 yr So Kaz, does that mean that its really up to the birds whether it is the right time to breed? Do they go into breeding condition only when they deem the weather appropriate to do so? Yes and no. Temperatures where you live can affect the breeding pair and chicks. Too cold and hen often suffer egglaying issues. Easier to get eggbound in winter. Chicks hatched through the night can be dead by morning if not fed and pulled under the hen to be kept warm. Too hot and parents get off the eggs to get out of the hot nestbox. Some eggs dont make it because of this. Too hot in the nest will also cause stress for parents and chicks in the nest. Often more bacterial infections in the nest during summer. Water and food must be scrupulously clean and refreshed often during a hot day. A grain of seed on a birds beak and introduced to the water supply in summer will sour the water very very quickly as wilol droipings in the water turn it into a dangerous cocktail in a very short time in summer. Birds go into breeding condition ........when ALL THINGS ARE RIGHT not just weather, food, health, housing etc. Edited April 26, 201015 yr by KAZ
