Planning An Aviary

Hi, after much debate I have been granted W.A(wife approval) to start planning/building an aviary :D

I've been ringing up a storm getting prices on various materials but thought it best to get some basics out of the way first. Any advice you may have is appreciated.

The dimensions of the aviary are 4000mm long x 1500mm deep x 2000-2200 high(skillion roof with 300mm eves) set on a concrete slab. The 4000mm front will be facing west and exposed to the afternoon sun, I'm keen to insulate if I can find a light weight/bird safe wall lining. I'd like to use 1500mm x 1200mm area at the southern end as a safe enrty point and storage area. The remaining 3000mm will be for the birds.

The plan was to mesh an area 600mm from the ground on the northern end which would include the northern face and 1200mm from the northern end on both the east and western sides. The only other mesh areas would be a security door and window on the southern end. As we live quite close to the beach the southerlys can be quite strong so I'm in two minds about a screen window and door on the southern end.

Is the mesh area mentioned to large or small for the aviary size? Will the air flow be sufficient? Whatdaya rekon?

Tips

1. dont have mesh down to the ground as mice run straight through. Tin up at least 2-3 ft.

2. Have the roof height higher as its better in summer...lower roof is hotter ....go at least 2400 or 2700 high.

Got any plans ?

Thanks Kaz, just a rough sketch I sent to a steel frame mob with dimensions for a price. The original plans had mesh starting 600mm off the ground to the roof. I will check local council requirements re: heights.

Very keen to get started but I want to get it right.

ifyour any good at art try using google sketch up,im currently trying to draw up a playgym and get my to build it *but i suck*lol

Hi

I can't help you with the way you have to secure a aviary or birdroom against you native predators and pests but i can maybe point out some useful ideas for the inside

especially the work area is most important in my view

its added at the bottom of the pages as its a later update
