Hi There,

Im a new member based in Sydney. Very excitied to join as there is such a huge amount of knowledge and tips for beginners like me! I have 4 budgies, 2 hens, 2 cocks. These are much loved pet budgies and I am hoping to breed them. I have been reading alot about breeding etc and genetics and what to expect from the possible pairings, however Im not sure what im starting with! Just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction!

I think i have or have been told i have, 1.lutino hen 14MTHS,2. YF blue opaline cock 3YRS, 3. recessive pied cock 18MTHS, 4.normal green hen UNKNOWN AGE-STRAY. thanks nett.h (I HOPE THE PICS WORK!)

Welcome! I am basically no use when it comes to genetics so I can't really say. The pics do not seem to be working. What are the age of your birds? There is a section for new members to introduce themselves. ;)

Welcome by the way.

I cannot tell if your yellow bird has red eyes or not. red eyes = lutino,if not, there are a number of possibilities.

Your YF blue opaline cock looks to have grey wings. Kaz is better at identifying grey wings than me, but those wings and the tail are not the norm on a normal winged bird, opaline or not.

Your recessive pied is very poorly marked, as in he is almost clear. Is it possible he is a DF dominant pied, not a recessive pied?

Light green hen, no doubts there.

hi thanks for your help, i will catch my yellow girl and check, she is new to avairy and im just letting her settle in, i dont think she has red eyes, and you've answered my query that lutinos must have the red/pink eyes to be ino. Yes the cock could be DF, he on only has blue on his lower half, and under tail, pics in books give great examples of standards in varietys, so if he is poorly marked, explains why i cant identify him by a book. The other cock, does have

greyish wings.

thanks again for your help, my curiosity just wants to know!! except for the yellow hen, they all came from people who no longer could keep them as pets, so often info might be a bit off the mark.

'lutino' is DF spangle? Not to good with genetics so I'm probably wrong.

Hi Nett.H

Thats a mixed bag you have there it is a bit hard to tell from the photos what the exact colours are, your yellow bird looks to be a lacewing as it has to much suffusion to be a lutino but it could also be a double factor spangle if it has black eyes. I can't see your pied properly but if it has solid black eyes with no ring it will be a recessive pied.

As for what colours you may get it will depend entirely on what the birds are carrying genetically as your hens are both green series birds and your cocks are blue so unless your hens carry the blue gene you will get all green series birds from them.

Bit like a lucky dip really but thats the fun of trying. All of the hens from your opaline cock will be opalines at least that much is for sure ;)

I think it has black eyes so I could be right.

Didn't think hens could be split for blue... my genetics brains haven't been working of late but I'm pretty sure about that.

Back to the books JB...anything can be split blue...it isnt sex linked just a recessive gene to green.

How did I get a blue baby then JB? Marigold is split blue.

:hap: I was typing that thinking, "You know this post is going to come back and bite you... just wait till you get home and check for yourself before you post."

But NOOOOOOO! JimmyBanks goes and posts anyways... lol

Hi thanks to everyone.

i,ll be doing an eye check!!! however lucky dip will do me fine.

your birds are beautiful

i think you have either a lacewing yellow hen as the tail feather has a cinnamon (brown)strip down middle of it this is if her eyes are red could be a cinnamon lutino if cheek patches are white as ino does not mask cinnamon everything but ..

if they are black

then i think you have a cinnamon yellow bird possibly a df spangle but im not sure she is so mabe a dark eyed clear

but i did think they were ment to have clear wings not sure

beautiful birds what ever their variety

hi, just an update, my yellow girl seems to have black eyes with a yellow ring same as my green hen, my possible RC pied boy has all black eyes. my yellow girl does have brown strip in tail, and again faintly markings on wings. does this mean she is a lacewing cinnamon?

thanks nett.h

After all that is seems you have a

double factor Spangle

single factor Goldenface Opaline Greywing

Recessive Pied

and an Opaline Lacewing

The Lacewing is a combination of Ino and Cinnamon. It is produced when the genes for ino and cinnmon crossover onto the same sex chromosome.
