wondering if anyone has used computer discs to make toys for budgies? Does anyone know if they are safe or not and if birds can chew them?,

I dont know what they are made of, but they do splinter once broken so I wouldnt use them. Even the thicker plastic toys in my aviary get chewed up by the budgies.

I personally wouldn't. I agree with Kaz on the splintering. I use cd's to keep wild birds away from my avairy- the light shines off them and scares them. Check out our toy thread in setting up a cage/avairy for ideas if you like. If you're trying to use up old cd's on something, they make great coasters

Depends what they are made of.But I wouldn't anyway.

Thank's for replies, just thought we might be able to recycle them somehow. Mine have great fun trying to chew the cable ties I've got holding branches to-gether, they haven't chewed those yet!! They have fun swinging off the tail of them etc. They also love the swings I made to Kaz directions. Also bangles strung on chain at intervals and climb from one to the other and back, hang off them climb through them etc.

be careful with cable ties that they don't have any metal in them for them to get hurt on, I would also think that a CD is very much like a mirror if they are not scared of it they may become possessive of it because of the reflection.

Hi Elly, No our cable ties are a clear or black plastic type. One end just slip into the other and pulls up into a loop with little ridges. I didn't cut surplus off about 4-6in long and they swing of it, hang off branch and flip it etc. l.o.l.

UV light makes cable ties brittle ...they fail within a year or so....prepare for that or use another method.
