Posted March 30, 201015 yr Hi everyone, Does anyone have a picture of a chick at about 4 days with splayed legs? I was checking and cleaning my nest boxes this morning and discovered a chick that has issues with one leg. I am not sure if it hatched with it or has bee squashed by the other 5 chicks in the nest. The chick has one leg that stretches backwards on an angle, i am not sure if this is a deformity or a splayed leg. I remember seeing Kaz's post on how to fix splayed legs so that is why i am asking for a picture from someone on the forum so i can compare it with my chick. I CAN'T post a picture from my end as i only have a iphone camera and you can't zoom in to get a picture clear enough or close enough to be of any help. Hopefully i won't have to cull this chick. Thanks Lib Edited March 30, 201015 yr by KAZ
March 30, 201015 yr We have pictures on this forum somewhere....if not check the FAQ section. Most people forget to use our faq section. It wont be from "being squashed" ....it may be a deformity and not splayed. Sometimes chicks arrive with a seperation in the bone between their "knee joint" and hip. If you have one like that.....If I do, I mean, I euthenase it.

I have a friend who is a vet nurse and she has offered to take it away for me and do whatever she does, but i am curious what you think the most humane way to do this not so pleasant job is. From what you described in your reply i think it is a deformity as when the chick is in my hand the knee joint is red and if you move the leg forward it looks as though it has no obvious hip joint. This is the down side to breeding budgies, Yuk!!!!!
