i am so excited as i am starting breeding on thursday and all my hens and cocks are top quality and i have 5 pairs yahhhhhhhh and when the eggs hatch once i start breeding them then they are sooooo cute :yes:

Good luck! How far are your nest boxes apart? I know colony breeding is not the best choice but it is your decision. Keeping my fingers crossed no problems!

somtimes my hens push each others eggs out of the others hens box and somtimes attack the babies .what is the best way to breed budgies?Do you split them up or put them in an avairy?

your only asking for troubble collany breeding

if i had

five top quality pairs then i would want to

give them the top quality safty the deserve to breed and raise their chicks in

its not much to get a few cabbinits made up

and not hard to hang a nest box on

it would even be less expencive than what it will be buying new cocks or hens or vets bills what ever 9HOWEVER I DONT THINK VET WOULD BE IN YOUR VOCABLUARY IF YOU WONT PAY FOR CABNITS I DOUBT YOUR GOING TO PAY FOR A VET

Hi Clancy, I'm really excited for you, its great to have another budgie breeder on board, please don't be put off by some of the comments on this board, enjoy this great hobby. Breed as you choose to, but use it as a learning experience, watch the pairs closely get to know them. You'll have your share of success and failure and as you gain experience you may change some of your current ideas. But Good Luck ENJOY! Clearwing

I really do hope you dont have trouble this time like before Clancy, but since you go to school you cannot watch over them all the time. It is a concern, thats all.

When I was younger my family used to colony breed. I think it's most budgie lover's starting point. To start off with, it went brilliantly, but then more birds were added, more chicks were born and more and more hens started going after the same nesting boxes. It ended up in alot of wounded/maimed and/or killed birds.

 

Not saying this will happen to you, but by looking at the previous posts, it has happened. Maybe this time it wont happen - fingers crossed and best wishes it doesn't.

 

I won't do it again as I don't want to put my birds through that sort of trauma. Plus I get to select which cock I breed to which hen and hopefully some of the colours, varieties and mutations I want will come out. Selective breeding of your birds is good if there are certain goals you want to achieve

 

Maybe you don't have the funds and/or support from home to be able to let you have the choice to selective breed. Maybe you don't have the space. Or maybe you just find it an easier way to have your birds. You have your reasons for Colony Breeding. I may not agree with your choice in breeding, but I'm not one to judge - it would be hypocritical of me to do so as I once colony bred.

 

BUT with time and experience, you will learn happiness and heartache, learn different things, grow with your birds and build your own knowledge. And hopefully take some of our info here on board We're only trying to help you.

okay im not going to apoligize for notwishing you luck as i dont see you being able to watch birds enough and after reading your threads with losses and stuff

but i guess i should at least let you know i would always help if i could with advice if things do turn sour as i think i have once before

just make sure all boxes are at same height

all you place in two boxes per hen

all boxes are at least one foot apart

that once all birds are paired and have found boxes that all unpaired birds are taken out cocks and hens this goes for and all left over nests are also taken out

if you do this you should have success at collany breeding

i never collny breed when i begain breeding but i did breed a few pairs in same flight once

i didnt have any trouble but i did watch birds everyminit they were near my window and i was home all day everyday

i only did it the once as the hens were flighty and unsure of eachother when ever they left the nest

its not just the hens who kill chicks the cocks also will kill chicks and eggs and sometimes cock fight will kill another cock two claim both hens

so just be very caushes of your set up and make sure theirs plenty of seed fruit and veg dayly and watch your birds closely

 

i didnt mean to come across so harsh just a warrning i gave to a friend was not taken and because of this one of her birds is now parralized and i guess i just figger if people would listen then these things wouldnt happen

They are happy you are excited, but they have had some bad experiences with collony breeding and don't want you to go through the same thing. Good luck! It is your choice and I won't judge you by that choice. I really hope everything goes well for you and your birds.

thanks i really dont have the space it just an old cubby house and well pop just biult 2 aviarys inside it so thats what happened and i have half a clue because by pops dad bred top top show qwality budgies but im not in it or show budgies more just the pleaser of watching them growing and then taming them

i do have to agree that last time things did get pair shaped and the haen that i thourght was egg bound "nancey" shes fine and im breeding with her again as she is a good breeder

We are not being mean, just hoping you would have leanrt from past blood shed. This is a public forum, and when you post a topic you will get both the negatives and the positives... that's just the way things work.

I can afford cabniets i have 2 and im using them avairy breeding is my choice and i cant remember any deaths last tome and i do want to have happy and heltheay budgie

if you ever hear the eeeee dolfin like eeeee then id be running out to see whos in trouble it may just be the saving of a nest a chick or a good hen

 

also how long since egg bound hen was egg bound as she should have a years rest from that before breeding again or could happen again

Blood shed does not always mean death. I colony bred before I knew better, and had blood shed, but no deaths. I was lucky enough to step in before anyone was killed, and their injuries were fixable. I now have a number of hens missing the ends off their toes from nest box battles. I hope for your birds sake nothing goes wrong.
