Posted March 29, 201015 yr Hi everyone! Just thought I would introduce myself My name is Liza (internet alias: Tari). I am 22 and currently studying full time doing a Bachelor of Arts majoring in History and English, and a Bachelor of Education for Secondary Schooling. I also have two jobs, one as an English tutor and the other as a sales assistant at Pet City in Mt Gravatt (Bird/Reptile section). I love all animals but especially birds and snakes. I am lucky enough to share my life with a wide selection of animals, including: 3 budgies (Bernard, Captain Pickles and Tinuviel), a princess parrot (Adonis), 2 guinea pigs (Bella and Snowball), 2 king quails (Troilus and Harlot), 5 zebra finches (Karma, Jinx, Hex, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern), a scorpion (Orion), a jungle python (Ziggy Stardust), a spotted python (Apophis) and a coastal carpet python (Simbi). My fiancée is currently doing a Cert III in Native Animals Rehabilitation and eventually wants to undertake a degree in Veterinary Science. We are also both RSPCA Volunteers. I love everything animal and can not imagine my life without them I really look forward to being a part of this community Tari xx

March 31, 201015 yr Hehe yes I like to think I know what I am talking about Pet City is fantastic though .. have been going there for years for pretty much all my pet supplies I feel really lucky to now work there. Thanks for all the warm welcomes A lot of us have experienced the more dodgy pet stores and the bad advice they give re birds, cages, and them selling budgies with obvious health issues. You may find quite a few of us are on the whole anti pet stores because of this. Its good to know you work for one of the good ones Some of us monitor the bad pet stores and keep them on their toes, with prompting for better conditions, better advice for customers etc. Just because someone owns or works in a pet store does not make them knowledgable. This is not aimed at you.....just generally speaking. I am glad you feel the way you do about where you work. We know there are good pet stores out there. Would love to hear some of your positive stories about RSPCA animals. Edited March 31, 201015 yr by KAZ
March 31, 201015 yr Author Kaz, We do a health check on all birds sold .. from the smallest finch to sulphur crested cockatoos. We check: the vent for any signs of a messy bottom; legs and feet for any sign of scaly mite; breast area to make sure it is plump; make sure eyes are bright and clear etc. If they do not pass any one of these health checks then we do not sell the bird and take it up to our quarantine section. We are in constant contact with one of Brisbane's highest regarded Reptile / Avian vet, Deb Monk who runs Brisbane Bird and Exotics Vet We are also encouraged to refuse sale to anyone who is not willing to buy the right size cage for the bird they want I love my pet store. I have actually reported a few pet shops here in Brisbane to the RSPCA because of there horrible conditions. Pet City is pretty much the only pet shop I would buy livestock from. This has turned out more like an advertising rant .. but I am just trying to articulate how high the standards are All the staff members have a lot of experience with the animals we sell, several have worked at Australia Zoo etc. So yeah .. it is a fantastic learning experience for me I love it. Liza
