I have a question for those of you who live in Australia. I am in vet school right now and between our third and fourth year we have to work with a veterinarian that does both companion animals (cats and dogs) as well as agricultural animals (cows, horses, sheep, chickens, pigs). I was thinking about going to Australia for the summer to do this so i can travel and learn at the same time. Can any of you give me suggestions of places that fit these criteria. Names, numbers, and any information would be appreciated. if they also did avian medicine, even better. The place must treat both companion and one of the agricultural animals listed above.

How fun!!! Send a messge/pm to Chrysocome. She's our resident vet and has had many experiences in many different places. She doesn't venture here often, but I'm sure she'll reply when she can.

 

As to our winter... it's always cold and sometimes wet. Depending on where in Australia you end up.... determines how cold and wet it will be.

Lots of vets will do all you wish, depends where you would like to be based though. I think any of our winters no matter where in Aus you are wont be nearly as bad as what you guys get.

 

Me- I would choose Brisbane or coastal Qld somewhere Plenty of work, farms and lots of beautiful places to visit on days off and not too cold.

WA- too far between places to see the variety you get in Qld.

Vic- very pretty but cold in winter

Generally to get expereince with

agricultural animals (cows, horses, sheep, chickens, pigs).

you will need a rural or semi rural vet not a city vet.

Agree with KAZ, I'd be looking at semi-rural. Although you are from the states so you might like the idea of going 'bush' and in that case you'd go rural, lets face it what farmer doesn't own a dog or two. Everyone on McCloud's does and thats a true blue, fair dinkim, Aussie show ain't it?

 

I digress... If it was me coming from America I'd go bush, if it was me who's been born and raised here, I'd go outer suburbs of the city. But like others have suggested probably PM Chrysocome she might be able to get you in contact with someone.

winters here in NY are around 20 degrees F and snowy so any thing warmer is more like spring time to me. What is the temp. range there in winter?

no snow here in melbourne the weather is a bit random *as they say if you dont like the weather wait 5 minutes*. umm around maybe 10-20 celcius*not F* sometimes wet sometimes its just a normal day though*23 C*

not heard of that vet before but it is a good area, if you like bush/mountains over beach.

 

mostly here in this area (south qld) you can get 17 c to 25 c temps, mostly you can get around in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and a jacket or long sleeved shirt

Been to Bundaberg, great place. Loved it. Pretty much Sugar cane everywhere If you like Rum its the place for ya There would definately be a good mix of domesticated/agricultural animals there.

Working with a few large animal vets here in WA, I know lots of them are looking for staff (vets and locums willing to do large animal work).

 

Weather depends on where in Australia you lob - from warm and dry to cold and wet......

Bundaberg....home of Bundy R Bear. The origin of my preferred alcholic beverage. I so want to visit the distillery. They do make Ginger Beer there too. Sorry I digress.

 

Back on topic. I have a vet friend who lives in Geraldton. About 5 hours drive north of Perth (Western Australia).
