Posted March 19, 201015 yr Hi folks, I'm after some advice here...I've been having a chat to another member about when is the best time to introduce pairs to a breeding cage. I have been putting them together straight away after purchasing them. i.e. no time together in an aviary. I tend to agree this is not the best approach but I have no option at the moment as my aviaries are full of other birds (lovebirds and finches). What does everyone think about doing this? Is this approach a recipe for failure or can it work?
March 19, 201015 yr If you bought a breeding pair from a breeder who put the pair together and told you they are ready to go down then yes its fine under most circumstances/ If you bought them from different places then they need quarantine. To be considered also is the stresses involved in catching, transporting, new food, new home etc that CAN bring out any illnesses. I prefer to let them settle in awhile ( few weeks ) first, as breeding is just another form of stress on top of all the rest and they could get sick.
March 19, 201015 yr My breeding cages are in groups of 2 stacked 3 high. There is a divider between each pair of cabinets. What if I were to remove the divider and block off the nest box entry holes? This would allow 2 pairs to fly around in roughly 1.2m of space. Would this allow them to settle in without having the pressures of breeding thrust upon them?

Yes..................are the pairs from the same place or have they been paired up having come from different places ?
March 19, 201015 yr These were from a dealer but I doubt they are from the same breeder. In other words, not paired up at all.
March 19, 201015 yr I wouldn't be putting the birds up into the same cage if they are from 2 different breeders... if one is sick, they'll both get sick...
