February 14, 201015 yr Any news??? This is very exciting...your first hatching! I'm getting a visual of us all pacing back and forth like expectant fathers in a huge aviary waiting room!
February 14, 201015 yr Ditto!! From here Ratsy, all us surrogate Grannies are getting excited. It could take a day for little one to peck through.
February 15, 201015 yr Author Yes, I can't see anything. No broken egg shell or anything. Might it be dead-in-shell? Oh well. As it can take a day to hatch I'll wait and see.
February 15, 201015 yr Yes, I can't see anything. No broken egg shell or anything. Might it be dead-in-shell? Oh well. As it can take a day to hatch I'll wait and see. Generally around 20-40 mins to hatching from an opening in the egg. Doing the sums isnt it too soon for the first hatching ? If so, might be a damaged egg. Is the egg discoloured in any way ?
February 15, 201015 yr Not an opening, just a tiny crack. I believe this is called pipping? How long has it been with the opening ? if too long a chick can dry out and get stuck to the shell. Or it may be a damaged egg. What date were you expecting your first hatchings ? Edited February 15, 201015 yr by KAZ
February 15, 201015 yr Author 14th. I may have imagined the crack but I don't think I did. Maybe Marigold damaged the egg. Here was I thinking she was doing well.
February 15, 201015 yr Check again if you can buddy  You must have counted 18 days from the very first egg then. Try working on 18-21 days from around egg number three or so. Edited February 15, 201015 yr by KAZ
February 15, 201015 yr Thanks Kaz. I'll wait and see then. Go check the egg you think has a crack in it
February 15, 201015 yr I have tried Kaz. She doesn't come out when I tap the box. Read my article http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=13358 in particular this part........... 4. Access to Nesting Box. To gain access to a nesting box, just tap on the outside of the box and parent/ parents will usually hop out and allow you to check the babies. If the parent stays in the box and squarks its head off, try putting your hand in with palm facing down and back of hand upwards. That way you can gently access under the hen and lift her slightly on the back of your hand to check what's underneath. Be prepared for getting a nip...it's hardly ever blood-letting but just a warning nip from parent budgie to you. Some new Mums squark their head off and act very annoyed, others just let you look but watch closely to see what you are doing. At this point the hen may move to the outside of the nesting box while you check everything. Be careful of eggs that may break, and watch for signs of a cracked egg that may indicate an imminent arrival. If you see a chick half out of an egg, leave it be. They can usually manage to sort themselves out and interference sometimes can be fatal to the hatching chick. 5. Do Not Fear Checking Out the Nesting Box and Babies. Checking nesting boxes when chicks start to arrive is a must. You can time it for when parents are looking for food early morning and early evening. It is a good idea to check boxes twice a day. You really need to check to be sure..... A. Babies are being fed B. No eggs are broken or damaged C. Parents aren't eating their eggs and or babies ( Yes...it can happen ) D. Check for dead babies ( some are born through the night and die as they haven't been noticed or fed ) . This is a must as there is nothing worse than finding a dead baby budgie days later and knowing there is bacteria and illness in the nest from that. E. Check nesting materials F. Check for possible spiders, cockroaches or insects in the nest. Check for mouse activity in the nest. G. Check for possible deformities in the babies. i.e. Splayed legs, ( which is correctible if caught early enough and treated ), bone and beak deformities. Much later when their eyes are open, check to see that they have both eyes, as some chicks can be born missing an eyeball. H. Check for food build up in babies beaks ( see Item 8 ). as time goes on checking a nestbox is very important....you will need to and whether or not a bird "lets you"will be irrelevant.
February 15, 201015 yr Author Still there. I'm pretty sure it's dead-in-shell. There is more cracks on it.
February 15, 201015 yr Still there. I'm pretty sure it's dead-in-shell. There is more cracks on it. Hi Ratsy, If there are more cracks it could still be chick pecking away, don't give up hope yet. :raincloud:
February 15, 201015 yr Still there. I'm pretty sure it's dead-in-shell. There is more cracks on it. maybe time to put the egg to your ear and listen for chipping you may need to assist its entry to the world theirs a special way to do itso dont just go cracking it open to help if cheeping is heard

February 16, 201015 yr Actually I checked this morning and a cracked egg shell was in the corner and a little pink thing was lying there! I just got back from school and it is still kicking! It's crop is full too! Cool Good news !! remove the eggshell too as it can wrap around a good egg and stop the good eggs hatching.
February 16, 201015 yr It isn't there now. Did Marigold remove it? She may have eaten it BUT just in case check the other eggs as they can wrap around an egg so close you dont notice.
