February 5, 201015 yr Author Thanks for that Finnie. I warned my bro if any do hatch then they will be really ugly so he wouldn't want to peep.
February 5, 201015 yr Yeah, seems like it's going toooo well. I'm not sure she came out yesterday as it was colder than usual and just sat in there looking puffy and being fed by Skye. I do actually have a picture of some eggs but camera went bust on me. She came out once this morning at 7:00. It sounds like everything is going really well Ratzy ~ Well Done! Yes, you are doing the right thing by dissuading your brother from getting in on the act and peeping on Marigold YOU are the carer and only you must be looking after them (keeping peeping to a minimum of course ) Edited February 7, 201015 yr by KAZ brothers can be a BOTHER but I think Renee meant BROTHER not bother

February 7, 201015 yr Thanks . I've noticed that there is a lot of feathers in the nest box? My cockatiels used to line their nest with feathers and while my own budgies haven't done this, I've seen nest boxes such as you describe...no worries...she's just making it soft and cushy for her babies.
February 7, 201015 yr Author Thanks for that. I noticed she has lost a lot of weight since she started laying. She was very fat before.
February 7, 201015 yr just make sure you keep up fresh food and water dayly and plenty of veg i find a slice of bread everyday seems to keep the birds weight on so the can be good feeders be careful to watch her as if she doesnt eat she could starve herself place a millit in her nest box dayly i would just along the wall dont need to desturb or move the eggs or her just slide it in for her to eat
February 7, 201015 yr Author Her mate feeds her. What type of bread GB? There is a stick of seed outside the nest box.
February 11, 201015 yr Hi Ratsy, I haven't given mine bread but I suppose multi-grain or whatever would do. It's getting close to first egg due now isn't it? Couple more days or so. Have you got some wood shavings etc. on hand to add to breeding box after chicks hatch. My dad's went mad on green food spinach etc plus extra seed when they started to feed chicks so that's good to have as well. for...
February 11, 201015 yr Her mate feeds her. What type of bread GB? There is a stick of seed outside the nest box. i just feed white bread rie breed is not good for nesting hens as it goes straight through them grain bread is okay but they dont really eat it much as all the grains so just normal safeway plain dollar 9 bread i give my nesting hens following dayly one slice of bread per cage one thin slice of apple or puree if have time carrots julian style just 3 little sticks water cress and silver beet and i aulternate the silver beet with english spinish one small leave per cage (i buy the packet leaves they last longer ) with the silver beet i buy a big bunch and keep it in a bucket of water with a table spoon of rock salt in it when the chicks come they get one half a weet bix each day dry pvm powder (pigion vitamin powder ) dry egg n biskit mix freash white rice and peas corn potatoe mixed vegies and i toss in a cob every once a week if theirs left over veggies from tea the birds get them mashed in morning one tea spoon per cage its not as hard as it sounds and only takes half hour of my time to preper i take all veggies and fruit (perishables out by 4 hours two on hot days ) looking forward to hearing of your first hatching  thats all on top of the seeds they get Edited February 11, 201015 yr by GenericBlue
February 12, 201015 yr Author Thanks! From tommorow onwards they should hatch. My cockatiel is lonely at the moment. We had a windy day and it shifted the cage divider so he got in. He doesn't do any harm and gets along with Skye really well. Unfortunately whn he got into the cage with the budgies he sat outside the nest box peeking at Marigold. Marigold didn't mind because he can't fit through the hole. That was before she layed an egg though. Then he accidently stuck his head in too far and pulled it out, squawking. I noticed that the nest box is on kind of an angle. It seems to be helping Marigold keep them together.

Don't be toooo disappointed if you don't get any chicks, if you couldn't candle eggs, they may not all be fertile. For a full count but it's not guaranteed love. The first ones laid may not be fertile and later ones o.k. (or vice versa) I had nine eggs in one nest and waited forever and last four hatched.
February 13, 201015 yr Author He's out of the way now. I won't be tooo dissapointed if they don't hatch. If they don't, how long until I can breed them again? What would be the average number of chicks you get from 5 eggs?
February 13, 201015 yr I can't really answer that Ratsy, more experienced breeders could. I think she'd need a rest after all the laying, sitting etc. just take one step at a time for now. Do you mean oats for your nest box? Generic brand would be as good as any, oats is oats.
February 13, 201015 yr Author Thanks. Might give Marigold a few weeks and if she's still in breeding condition use her again.
February 14, 201015 yr Author I may be wrong, but I think one of the eggs is hatching! There is a slight crack on it. Of course it might be from Marigold toenails.
February 14, 201015 yr :happy-dancing: How exciting Ratzy,i've been following your journal keep us updated through the day hope the chick hatches safetly. Libby
