Guess what I've found just now. That's right, a third member of the family!Only now have I realised how big the first baby had grown! Two eggs left! I think that egg moving side to side was another pinky getting ready to hatch. I'm adding nesting material every day.

Could I get 5 out of 5? A question.......... do most males go in to help momma feed the chicks?

You might get 5/5. The longer the distance between 1st and last egg can effect this and the last one can get covered in poo effecting it's chances... As to males feeding, mine have always helped, but not often from inside the next box. Some even help incubate, but none of mine have.

About 30-40 % of my males help the mum feed the real young ones. Some males pace up and down the perch excitedly to let me know there is a new baby too. I have had about 4-5 males who sit and incubate the eggs with the female.

And one male who just went in and sat on the eggs while the female took a break.....every time she wanted a break :D

That's nice to know! Skye gets excited when she is laying or an egg is hatching. All of the chicks always have full crops so Marigold is being a good mum. I actually thought Marigold would ban Skye from entering the box because she was always so picky about space.

Wow Kaz's pied is a beauty. Hi Ratsy, one of my pairs, Dad was in the nest box as much as Mum, with five chicks it was a tight fit but they all survived it. So I think it just depends on the bird. Your lucky you've got two great sounding parents for first timers. I also found Dad liked spinach and greens early in morning, seemed to feed chicks a fair bit of it because you could see specks of dk green throught the skin of their crops. :D

Mine loves carrot tops, I haven't tried spinich though. They are being good parents! Another egg is due to hatch today.

When I got back from town what did I find? Another little mouth to feed! The eggshell was still about and the pinkies were huddled together while Marigold had a stretch. Four down, one to go!

Great news Ratzy, sounds like marigold and skye are doing a fantastic job can't wait for photo updates.

Guess it is time to get some photos. I'll try, but you might have to wait a bit.

Sometimes people have to eat their words. I took this just after I typed this.

You're right! First pin feathers on eldest! Wow, I hadn't realised how much they'd grown!

EDIT: I just realised that 2 of them have pin feathers and there is green showing on the crop from the carrot tops I fed them! When do they open their eyes? About a week?

Hey Ratzy...are you 5 for 5 yet??? It's so wonderful that Marigold and Skye are doing so well as first time parents...I'm very happy for you :bliss:

Mine also go absolutely crazy for carrot tops...they eat them, play in them and generally go completely loopy when they get them. Luckily, a local farmers market gives them to me free when I stop in. The cage with the shw budgies just looks at them disdainfully as if to say "What? You expect us to eat that???" ...they'll come around, I hope. They certainly aren't as playful as the pet types.

Let us know when that last little one makes an appearance! :budgiedance:

I'm really not sure. I think it has but I just caught a glimpse of white.

Nope. Looks like a dud egg. I'll give it a day or two.

Give it a few more days Ratzy...I've had one go days longer than expected and then hatch! Either way, they've done beautifully for first time parents...4 is great!

It still hasn't hatched. The eldest has its eyes fully open. I might be able to take more photos soon.
