first let me say a big THANKS to kaz who helped me get set up here.....i have been reading through the posts here and am very thankful that i found this group.....it has lots of wonderful and helpful info.......i have now determined that i do in fact have a recessive pied light green hen who is in breeding condition....i have no clue how old she is because she was given to us by someone else......i know she is atleast a year old......she is also very aggressive and does not like human contact at all........my daughter has worked with her quite a bit and has had to use gloves to handle her because she will bite so hard.......we have now decided that it might be best to just get another budgie to keep her company because it is obvious by the conversations she carries on with the birds outside that she is lonely and would probably benefit from having a mate......my questions would be if i do get another bird that seems to be very tame will this help her settle down and would it be best to get a male

Hi and Welcome :D

If you are going to get another budgie and do not want possible breeding problems I would suggest a same sex friend.

Time also to reassess the cage size and type in case you need an upgrade ( females love to squabble over perch space of there isnt enough :D ).

Reaquaint yourself with how to sex budgies as many get it worng, especially if they think any blue on a cere is male. Young females or females not in breeding conditon have ceres that have both white and blue on it too :D Young males have pinky purple ceres.

You can post photos here..........have a look at the link in my signature...it will tell you how :)

Good to see you here :D

well i definitely know i have a female in breeding condition and we already went and picked up two males......the cage i have that my female is in is fairly large with lots of different perches in it.......i was thinking about possibly breeding them but it was not a priority......just figured she would get along better with a male......i am hoping she will bond with one of them and the other will be more of a pet......i will get pics of everyone on hopefully this afternoon......i believe i have a recessive pied, not sure what color blue and a rainbow.....please correct me if i am wrong because i am here to learn

Hi, welcome :P

If you do get a friend for your budgie. You will need to quarantine the new one for at least 30 days.

yep the boys are in quarantine in another room for the whole 30 days

okay here are some pics of my budgies.......sorry the ones of the boys are not very good...they are in a smaller cage and it was hard to get a good angel and they are still pretty flighty.....also the lighting is not very good...i will try to get some better ones on soon.......okay i have also looked up the colors and stuff a little more and what i thought was a rainbow is a yellow face type 2....i am still not sure of the colors on them though....the recessive is a really pretty almost turquoise color and the yellow is so many colors i am just not sure

IMG_5967.jpg He is a clearflight opaline dominant pied and not recessive. Has he got iris rings and what colour are his iris rings...because he looks young.

If you are going to breed in the future...they will need to be over 12 months and you cannot have a spare male in the same cage with a male, female and a nesting box or there will be fights.

:P

Is it just me or is the one in the last photo a spangle?

What makes you think it is a spangle ? :D

There are no spangles there.

For once I don't have Spangle Brain so I think I can say with confidence, it's definitely not. They're all Pieds....I think?? :D

yes he does have iris rings and they look to be a pale grey or white....so about how old would that make him?........i am not sure yet about the breeding situation but after they have been quarantined i will probably be back to ask about that as well...lol
