Posted March 17, 201015 yr Hi All, Have been finding webbing in my seed containers. Some type of weevil I presume. Does anyone know something that will deter these bugs without harming birds? Also could they be harmful to birds if they injest the ?grubs/moths whatever is making the webbing.
March 17, 201015 yr Putting the seed in ziplock bags in the freezer for a few days will help. It isnt just the bugs in the seed you have to worry about for the budgies...the things is they eat the middle out of most of the seed leaving very little nutrition for the budgie. Unfortunately often you have to throw it all out and start all over again. I run a mozzie zappper on the birdroom to get rid of the moths that lay their eggs in our seed and such.
March 17, 201015 yr Author Thank's Kaz. It's the seed in the aviary that's the problem.I have a seed container which has a lid, with a tray type piece in front. They seem to be getting into the open tray and building webbs up into container. My hanging feeder, touch wood, seem's o.k.can't work out how to stop them.
March 17, 201015 yr You will need to keep a watch on the web,as it will stop the seed from comeing out, there was a talk about this very thing at the meeting last night. The self feeders with the glass front, you look at the feeder & think, there is plenty of seed in the hopper, only problem, there is none comeing out as the moths have spun a web accross the opening & no seed is flowing out. I must say,I have never come accross the problem.

I did find web and tiny grubs under husk in feeder shelf, I was worried that if birds ate them, could it be harmful or just a bit of protein.
March 21, 201015 yr Author No haven't seen the moths Nubbly and we have a bug zapper on garden shed, not far from aviary. I thought that might attract any away from aviary. Obviously not. I have seed stored in plastic drums and no sign of them in there so they arn't already in seed bags.
