Hiya all,

I have finally signed up to this great forum, I am amazed by the amount of knowledge and help available here.

I had some budgies as a kid and decided to build an aviary 2 years ago. I have 3 young daughters and I thought it would be great to have them grow up with some budgies. I have 20 adult birds in a 3m by 2m aviary. I put nesting boxes in the aviary and have been colony breeding over the past 6 months. My 6 year old has been very exited that her budgie (Sickie - that was what she wanted to call it) has successfully raised some babies.

After reading some of the posts on here I am thinking that I need to move away from colony breeding and thats where I am up too now.

My birds are pet type and allow me hours of enjoyment every week.

Anyhow that is my story.

Any advice and/or help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome

Yes colony breeding will lead to some heartache as well as force bird who are underaged to breed too soon.

We would love to see your aviary pictures. There is a link in my signature on how to post pictures

Cheers kaz

Welcome to the forum Dong. That's great that you have your kids involved. I remember growing up and our neighbours had budgies. They were awesome, We always wanted to hang out near the aviary. Read through the FAQ section, there is always great information in there and the PInned topics at the top of each forum section is also great reading.

;) As I come from Italian extraction and often used to get called "ding" I assumed ding dong or dong was a derivative of that

haha! Dong means mate or friend in Filipino I think... it means something in Filipino, We call a guy at work Dong.

Welcome Dong :D

I'm not sure if "dong" means the same there as it does here but I don't think I could call someone Dong even as a nickname :D

My ex had an uncle who was actually named Honkey Dong....no lie! All these years later I still giggle when I drive down the street he lived on :)

Anyway..it's nice that you've joined the forum and I think it's sweet that your kids are involved with your birds too. My daughter and her friends help me a lot with all our birds and it's great. Maybe we need a section on the forum for our junior budgie enthusiasts to post. It would be a good mentorship program! :D

Looking forward to seeing pictures of your aviary and feathered friends.
