Looking great! Are you hand raising her?

I'm not hand raising, but I do daily checks to make sure s/he's doing good. I also take the time for photo op's during the checks.

I love your photos, the chick is so cute

I'm thinking stormy's a cobalt chick. I'm also not seeing a whole lot of yellow in the face, I know the YF/GF genes are a bit weird but I would expect a chick with GF from the cock and YF from the hen to have at least one of them.

Here are yesterdays and todays pics. I take back my DF pied assumption, seems like a lot of blue is coming through now.

I must be way to tired when I update this because I just now realized it put the wrong year as the thread topic, woops.

Sooooo cute! I was wondering about the topic title.

  • Author

Ahh well, maybe a mod can change the thread title.

And here are todays photos.

pictures263-2.jpg

This one is a bit blury but you can still see the color. Under the cheeks there is also a slight touch of violet or mauve too, little weird.

pictures267-2.jpg

Awww. Can't believe how much s/he has grown.

Ahh, thanks Dave.

been a few days since I posted pics, I'm really liking the color this chick is showing, almost lavender and a lot of white. I'm leaning toward male, the cere is very uniform pink, might be a little early yet to call it though.

Here are todays photos

Hen is opaline, sexing by opaline would be out of the question. And the chick has black dots, which indicate that it will not be opaline.

you can see the dots in this photo

pictures063.jpg

The cock is also golden face, not YF, this chick should be both as the hen if YF.

I do think it'll be heavily pied though, possibly DF, as both parents are dom pieds.

the chick will be double factor yf if not showing a yellow face

which means that when you breed him or her that if paired to a white faced bird all chicks will be yf of one type or the other

you pics are so beautiful

im loving this thread

beautiful defenently a opaline chick by way

I suppose DF YF is possible considering GF would probably mask it, so Hector could be both, but even so I would expect to see GF. I might have to re-pair these two to see what else they give.

Here are todays photos

you can see from this picture that s/he's not opaline, there is a white streak running between the wings though, perhaps that is why so many assumed opaline. However there is no cobalt on the wings/back of neck.

pictures312-2.jpg

this one came out a bit blurry but you can see the amount of white on him/her, this chick is marked more so like the hen than Hector.

pictures308-2.jpg

And learning to be affectionate towards people, any gender guesses with this photo?

pictures311-2.jpg

pictures313-2.jpg

I'm not sure with gender... my guess is female. Looking great!

well i say opaline as i swear i could see tiny bit of the violet or mauve what ever colour she is on wing markings

doesnt have a opaline v in all pieds some you cant even tell

rec pied opalines are distinguished sometimes only as the barrings are broken across the head

i still say opaline their for a hen

and if you had more chicks from this pair you wouldget all yellow face unless a df yf was in nest

as both peronts are yellowface you did say they were yf didnt you

of what type it does not really mater

1,2 or goldenface

as two yellow face birds produce all yf chicks bar the df yellowfaces you get in nest which are yelloface just not vishually

does this make sence

I can't say I have any experience with rec pied opalines so I'll wait til some mor experienced members get here.

Edited by Ratzy

i wasnt saying she was rec pied as i honestly cant remember what type off pieds the peronts were but im just stating

opaline rec pieds dont always have the v

or the coloured wing feathers if they do their really light and go un noticed

heres a opaline dom pied not df just dom see how hes not got the opalineing

he was split rec pied giving the aperance of being df

dom he was opaline and split cin

0e4e2fbc.jpg

okay now here is a opaline goldenface sky rec pied

you wouldnt beable to tell with out the fact that i breed him and his mum was opaline as was dad

if you note his neck you may just beable to see the barring brake up slightly and the very very pale colour thats it though

141e634e.jpg

and when older you cant tell as being single factor goldenface it just takes over and the opaline is hidden

I posted last night but I guess the internet ate it. GB, I dont see any signs of opaline on this chick. Here is yesterdays photo, feel free to edit it to show me where you see cobalt in the wing bars.

You can take the hen out of the nesting box when the young is this old to stop her laying eggs as Kaz suggested yesterday on your other post...

LB, I am hesitant to remove the hen because thats how her mother died, I removed her and I think the stress caused her to bind(she was a very flighty bird and took her a good while to calm down after handling). I'd hate to remove this hen, even though she's not as flighty, and have the same thing happen. Thats why I gave her the dummy, hopefully she'll accept it until the chick fledges in a few days then I'll remove the box.
