Posted March 4, 201015 yr I lost one of my beautiful male budgies today, cry........to make it worse it was one of my breeding pairs (aussie) who my 8 year old Nick found him dead in the bottom of the cage, the bird was ripped apart, not a pretty sight. Candy the hen survived with only a little bit of blood on her from when she flew down to check on her mate. They have been together for a few weeks now and she was spending a lot of time in the nesting box, they were madly in love but now she's all alone, what can I do for her as she might be ready to lay eggs? Watch out for rats people there killers and my goal in life is to kill as many of these beasts as posable. aussie you were the best and Candy and the boys will miss you deeply.
March 4, 201015 yr Sorry for your loss. If the hen is to lay eggs, she can look after them dherself. i would leave her in the breeding cage for a few weeks to see. If she is in the breeding season, i wouldn't replace the cock bird as the new one could be considered as a rival and she could attack him.
March 4, 201015 yr How was the access to the cage for the rat to have got to your cockbird ? Can you make any changes to protect them now based on this occurrence. I have had rats dig into an aviary in the past so I know how nasty they can be... Hope you dont have any more of this happening. Are you setting traps for the rats ? Edited March 4, 201015 yr by KAZ
March 4, 201015 yr So Sorry about your Aussie. Taboo. I suppose it upset Nick badly as well to find your little mate like that. I haven't had any rats to deal with mice are bad enough. Hope you don't have any more "visit's" or hope he finds a trap first.

Are you setting traps for the rats ?Hi KAZ, The birds in the aviary are safe, it's the birds that I had on my veranda that weren't unfortunately, the cage was a large bar type and thats where the problem was the rat squeezed through the bars and into the cage. I have had baits out everywhere for weeks, my veranda is usually a safe place and the birds were always covered but it's now a no go zone for my birds. I have put my breeding cages in the aviary with the other birds, I don't know if it will work but at least there safe, I was told that with out the cock bird to fertilize the eggs they will be know good.Cheers Thanks robyn, I will get this rat tonight I have bought a trap and written on it for Aussie, this might sound strange but the boys really want to get even with this monster and this helps them a little.
