Posted April 28, 200520 yr Anybody have any suggestions, My lutino female who is 3 weeks old is already getting mad at me for handling her, she bites (not in the curious baby way) and tries to get away. I have handled both the babies since they were 5 days old. From 5 days till 2 1/2 weeks they came out in my hand while i one handed changed the bedding in their nest. I started handling them for longer intervals and more often throughout the day after they were 2 1/2 weeks. The 2nd baby is absolutely fine with being handled, never bites and sits contently in my hand. I've posted in other topics about the 3 week old lutino female also being very "advanced" today she was perching on a perch outside of the nest! Could her independence have anything to do with her early development of dislike for me. Also, her mother (who I had to remove from the cage 2 days ago, she was attacking the male) has never let me handle her and bites very hard when she has to be handled- I don't believe she saw this behavior but could she have learned it? Better yet can she un-learn it? kristi
April 28, 200520 yr If your taming her then she'll probably grow out of it provided you completely ignore it when she bites, no matter how much it hurts don't utter a cry and don't jerk your finger away. She'll decide it's a fabulous game and keep doing it! I've always found that little girl budgies are the first to bite me when i handle them! And for little midgets they sure can bite hard!
April 28, 200520 yr If you keep at it she should get past this behavior. I have 5 hens I bred myself, and they have never bitten. But in the nest box, some of them are fearless, some will try to hide in the corner, and others will scream bloody murder when you so much as open the top of the box. I found that their behaviour in the nest box has absolutely no bearing on their personalities once they fledge. A quick way is to introduce her to millet. She is old enough now to begin to learn how to crack the seeds, and millet seems to be easier than most for them to learn on. Good luck!
