Posted March 1, 201015 yr hi everyone after being given the okay by the people at my apartment building to have a budgie last week I went and bought my cage I know it's not the most ideal model, but it was the best one by far in my area. I had my poor boyfriend driving around to at least 5 pet stores! This was the biggest and widest one I could find. I've seen pictures of this cage before, or at least similar designs to it, and realise that it is much too tall instead of being wide. I'm not sure that this picture does it justice, on the coffee table it is almost as tall as I am! I'm hoping to arrange the branches and perches so that the bird will have maximum area to fly around Can anyone suggest clever ways to position things so that the budgie can use all the space? I was wondering if you guys can give me feedback? Too many toys? Bad placement? What's the best way I can organise my branches around when I get them? I'm getting lots of eucalyptus branches tomorrow when my Mum visits from her farm so I won't be using those dowel ones. Here are some more pics: These plastic feeders came with the cage, and they fit into a big gap in it. There are 4 overall. I remember reading something about a budgie getting his foot caught in a model like this? Can anyone confirm that? If yes there is no way I will use them, but need suggestions for alternatives because when I remove them there is a big gap in the cage Edited March 1, 201015 yr by ultrav0x
March 1, 201015 yr You have a food or water bowl directly under a perch .........it will foul. Turn the cuttlebone vertical or the budgie will use it to sit on. Hang the swing in the highest peak and out of the way of flying across the cage.............add another perch top left so the bird can fly across the cage freely. You have no perches set up for flying across the cage Some of the toys can hang from the iside sides of cage to take up less space...they will still play with them like that. March 1, 201015 yr Author add another perch top left so the bird can fly across the cage freely. You have no perches set up for flying across the cage Yeah, just ignore the perch setup at the moment! The cage only came with two (??????) and I won't use them when I get the eucalyptus branches tomorrow. I remember reading somewhere that it's good to have the branches upside down. Why is this?

What do you mean by upside down Maybe its about any thin sticks still on the branches. If the budgie has alegring thin branches will get caught on a legring sometimes Edited March 1, 201015 yr by KAZ

I'm adding the natural perches in today with some leaves so in the next few hours I'll have some more photos. The cage looks so small in that picture! Maybe I'll get my partner (who is 6ft tall!) to stand next to it for scale
March 8, 201015 yr Author Here is what the cage looks like now after re-arranging things and adding some natural perches millet (OM NOM NOM) and foot toys.... do budgies use foot toys? I thought maybe the little guy could kick these around and make some noise  I know that the perch on the VERY top right is a bit too thin, going to scout around for some more tomorrow until my Mum brings some fresh ones & eucalypt leaves from their farm Can everyone please give me some feedback? Anything I need to change?
March 8, 201015 yr I know you've moved the perches around, but I think they may still foul water and food containers. Your top perches still hang above the containers. With that cage I can see it would be hard to place the perches so the birds still have room to move, you're doing well though! Maybe you could use different feed containers that hang onto the front and backs of the cage? That way you wouldn't need to move any of the perches at all? It looks good
March 8, 201015 yr Author Maybe you could use different feed containers that hang onto the front and backs of the cage? That way you wouldn't need to move any of the perches at all? Thanks for your reply! The tricky thing about this cage is that those feed containers are built in to the cage (there's a better picture of one just at the top of this thread). So I'd have to replace them with ones that sit exactly in that gap, or risk having an escapee from the cage! The seed part sits outside the cage, though, so I think I will be okay because the only bit that's in the.... 'firing line' will be the part the bird stands on... so I'll just keep a close eye on that to clean  ?
March 14, 201015 yr Author sounds good to me. whats the metal feeding bowl made out of? Stainless steel. He loves it

You know, if those food and water container do end up getting fouled, you could always leave them in there empty to fill the gaps, and put different ones up higher in a cleaner location. I'm often trying to rearrange where things go in my cages, and some configurations foul up the food and water, and others don't. Sometimes you just figure it out by trial and error.
March 15, 201015 yr I just wanted to say that I think it is great that you are taking the time to set up your cage in the best possible way. It's easy to see your are committed to doing the best for your birds! Trial and error is a good way to do things too....I still continually move things around in my cages when I can identify a problem and find a way to fix it.
