Posted February 28, 201015 yr okay My little girls budgie layed an egg a week ago. We have had two of them for about 2 years and my little girl came to me and said there was an egg or something on the floor of her cage. I went and looked and sure enough there was an egg, but my little girl had already handled it and somehow got a crack in it. we put it back and it doesnt seem the budgie is laying on the egg. The budgie had moved the egg some but now doesnt seem interested. we have a male and a female budgie. Should we get a nesting box or just through the egg away. Im not sure what to do. I need help Thanks Kychee

If she is in breeding mode she could lay 2 days apart or so OR it could be she's just laid a random egg if this one is a week old. If they are only in a small cage, is there room for a breeding box? Do you want them to breed? If so add a box if not don't. She may lay on floor but if she hasn't got a box she probably won't incubate them, by adding a box you will be encouraging them to breed. It's really what you decide. Keep us posted as to what you decide for any further help you need.
February 28, 201015 yr If you want them to breed, get a nest box. If not just throw the egg away (you can keep doing this as she lays others which is likely). She may start to incubate tham after a few days (this is normal for budgies as they often don't start to sit until after the second egg is laid). You can repair eggs with nail polish if the crack is recent and not too big - just make sure it dries properly before putting into the nest. If it's been a few days it's best to throw the egg out as it is unlikely it will hatch due to nasties getting in via the crack. Edited February 28, 201015 yr by nubbly5
February 28, 201015 yr hello and welcome. If you dont want them to breed then i would toss away the egg - it would be addled with handling anyways. To hopefully break the egg laying cycle, change the cage around completely and ensure there is nowhere for your hen to create any form of nest.
