Might you have to evacuate?

No...it won't get to that point here...people were advised to stay away from beaches and marinas here but it's probably only an advisory now since the waves were smaller than expected in Hawaii...only about a meter there from what I'm reading. Our waters here will no doubt rise but no huge waves..I think they were saying it would be about 0.5 meters here.

It's better to be safe than sorry. And I don't think it's quite accurate to say "nothing happened"...just ask the people of Chile...I doubt they'd think of the loss of over 400 people as "nothing"

I was in Samoa when the Earthquake/Tsunami hit, not a nice experience. Thank goodness the most that happened here was nothing like that.

 

Yes, it can be very tedious when you have warning after warning (which Pacific Islands have due to the vast expance that is the Pacific Ocean) but I also assure you something does happen sometimes. The problem is at this stage Scientist's can not accurately determine how big the waves will be...

 

The Tsunami in Samoa was devistating. I would not wish that on anybody. To ignore the Tsunami warnings is to tempt fate...

 

Before I experienced the Tsunami I, like lochlan, thought that nothing ever happens... I wish that were the case.

You are right JimmyBanks...I guess unless you've seen what a tsunami can do locally then people just don't get it. A town on the island I live on was devastated by a tsunami from an alaskan earthquake in 1964. Lives were lost and much of the town was destroyed...not something the locals take lightly.

Yes im accurate in saying nothing happened , because nothing did happen as we are talking about the tsunami , not the quake.

I tempt fate everyday when I get in my car and drive on the road.

If we have no accurate system then we may as well not have a system at all , as now people take no notice of the warnings.

Nothing = zero, zilch, nada, not a thing...

 

I believe you will find many countries experienced freak waves, while it was not a tsunami I believe it does not equate to nothing either...

 

you are right you do tempt fate every day when you git in your car.

 

When you drive down the road and you see a yellow sign with an animal on it what does it mean? Look out for wildlife that may be crossing the street. You may go past that sign every day for 15 years and never see the animal that is on the sign, but that doesn't mean that they should remove the sign. It's a known stretch of road that wombats, kangaroos, possums, (add any animal) cross and you need to be cautious. Same with the Tsunami warning... They didn't tell you to evacuate, they just advised you that a Tsunami could be on its way...

 

Thank goodness it only amounted to larger waves in most places this time...
