Posted February 26, 201015 yr Hi, I have amde an appointment to take a couple of birds to the vet but are unable to go until Monday as the avian vet is at a conference until then. I think a few of my budgies are showing signs of canker. I read the articles posted on the forum but was wondering can i get ronnivet-s from any vet or only an avian vet? The symptoms are regurgitation, shaking head from side to side and flicking seed from mouth at the same time. They looked fine yesterday, but this morning i noticed when i was doing my rounds. Is there anything else i can do? Local vet is uncertain of bird illnesses and refered me on. Lib
February 26, 201015 yr Author Did you ask your local vet if he had ronivet ? I spoke to my vet and he has said he doesn't have Ronnivet-S but he has the generic of which i will gladly be picking up this afternoon. I'ts funny you were only saying yesterday about cocci and now i have another issue. Is this something that happens in most aviary's and do we have a preventative treatment for canker or is it only if signs start to appear. lib
February 26, 201015 yr With Canker, I rarely get it in my aviary and if so its from introduced birds. I treat as I find with that

Lib I bought mine online - not because I needed it but so I had it in stock just in case my birds showed the symptoms. Usually you're required to have a prescription to buy Ronivet S but as I didn't have any birds with Canker, I couldn't very well take them to the vet and ask for the stuff. This may not be the most practical way of going about it, but at least I have it and won't need to worry quite so much if my birds did show symptoms and I can treat as I find Did you ask your local vet if he had ronivet ? February 26, 201015 yr Regular canker treatments are recommended. Canker like cocci is one of those common budgie ailments (aparently very common in pigeons too) and can cause deaths but is usually slower to do so than cocci and usually gives you more noitce of an outbreak. I have not done a canker treatment for about 3 years but copped a bit of canker this year so in went the Ronivet S - it works very well! I am a vet member of Vetafarm as Ronivet S is a vet script only drug and they need to have some records of your flock health status (by law) before they will sell it to you. Give them a ring and they can let you know the process (generally send in some poo samples, find out what is present in your flock. Also then you can buy preventative treatments like Doxy and Ronivet).

When i turned up to pick up the medication yesterday the vet realised that Ronnivet was the med i needed and appoligised for saying there was a generic so i have no medication but he said he could order it on Monday for me. I will get vetafarm a call also and get the ball rolling. I checked my birds for signs again this morning and none of the birds are regurgitating anything nor shaking their heads and flicking seed, a few birds are looking lethargic though so hopefully they hang in there until the Ronnivet comes. I have had budgies for 20 odd years and never had to treat my birds for anything other than the usual worming and mites. I suppose as your flock gets bigger the more you need to add to your budgie first aid kit. Lib
February 27, 201015 yr A good idea too is to find any people near you with birds who may have some meds to "loan" you in an emergency.
March 1, 201015 yr Author A good idea too is to find any people near you with birds who may have some meds to "loan" you in an emergency. Managed to order some Ronnivet today as well as some Doxy which is fantastic. My local vet was realy good and said if i need that sort of stuff i can just order it in. He is giving me enough to have some on hand in case i need it again. After i treat for canker do you think i should do a preventative treatment with the Doxy or just keep it on hand just in case. I did read the forum on resistance to antibiotics so i am interested to see what you would do. I haven't introduced any new birds but there are bronzwing pigeons that visit and i have an open roof section on my aviary where they can land and droppings can fall in so i suppose it's entirely possible that's where the canker could come from, might think about putting more roof sheets on unroofed section. March 1, 201015 yr Yes it is time to start thinking about the doxy... i'll have to get mine on it next month.
