Breeding Budgies

Featured Replies

Hi, How are you all.

I have an aviary with a dozen birds and 4 pair are mating.

The trouble is, all the hens keep going to the ond box when there are 4 available.

Is this normal?

Please help.

Thanking You.

if you do a search for Colony breeding on the site you will find a lot of instances where this happens...

It is best to have all the nest boxes at the same height, and spread out. You also should also double the amount of nest boxes in order to minimise this occuring...

Hope this helps...

geez KAZ,thanks very much for that link, I have found it very helpful.

I too, have tried colony breeding and with a big aviary and spread out nest boxes at the same height etc it still turned out the dominant females would attack other females nesting. Honestly it was a nightmare going in some mornings and finding the place looking like a crime scene from CSI! Yet, in saying this-I have known people to breed 'accidently' in this manner - i.e being new to the game just put in a bunch of budgies in an aviary with some nesting material available and they're telling me they can't stop the breeding! Sometimes it seems the more effort we put in the less we gain.

I agree with the others... even by doing all of this there is still a chance that fighting will occur... some would say an extremely good chance.
