This week was meant to be the week that I put my budgie plan into motion (got permission from the apartment where I live, got a cage etc.) but I ended up having to work for someone who was sick so yet again I am budgie-less! :D

Set to work on making my first set of toys today, though :) Went shopping around Canberra... do you believe that NOWHERE sells those pony beads? I have to buy some online, so while I wait.... here is what I managed to construct:

Those shiny bits of white light at the bottom are bells.... I'm still getting used to my new camera!

I found these awesome plastic clips to use instead of those metal 'pear clip' things

Bought a ladder and added some things to chew on :)

A toy I bought that I decided needed to be tidied up a bit. I ended up adding the bell back on as well but didn't take a photo.

Let's hope that the next week or so will see them being put to use after I finally get my budgie! This is taking ages! I must be the only person in the world who has spent 2 months thinking about getting a budgie... especially when you consider how often they are impulsively bought by people! AAAAAH :D

Excellent :D You gotta be happy with that. Pony bead here are as cheap as chips............... try the two dollar type shops and markets. If no luck I can get you some here and post over if you want me to shop for you.

Thanks KAZ but I managed to find some really cheap ones on eBay. For the record, I checked:

  • Hot Dollar
  • Reject Shop
  • Top Bargain (all are those two dollar shop things that are popping up everywhere)
  • Big W
  • Target
  • Eckersleys (craft store)
  • Lincraft

... and no luck! :D

Oh, you're new budgie is going to be a very lucky one! they look fabulous

Nice work!!! That first toy is brilliant!!!!!!! When I was making toys for my budgies, I also used some of those paper pans, for cupcakes. They didn't last long so I added them to existing toys, but they loved to shred them. Keep up the good work. The more toys you have the more you can move things around and the more your new budgie will enjoy his/herself.

Cool :o We should add these to our toys topic. You can if you like

Those toys look fantastic ultrav0x. I'm slowly getting some great ideas and quickly realising I don't have to spend the big $$'s on pet shop toys. :) Some of their prices are pretty steep.

I've bought a few things now that my budgies aren't really interested in - the only thing they seem to tolerate is their ladder (and only one of them will go near it). The pet store told me that budgies absolutely love those long coloured chunky plastic link chains - yet my two hate it and won't go near it. The only interraction is to quickly flick it out of the way in disgust if it accidentally gets in their way. But on the whole they completely avoid it along with the rest of the toys in their cage. Think I paid about $14 for the silly plastic chain. :D

If there's one thing that this forum has taught me it seems to be that you should never listen to pet shop workers! So many of them have no idea what they're talking about :) I guess it's important to remember budgies are individuals and have different tastes.

Maybe you could do something to the plastic chain to make your budgies like it? I don't know what kind of chain you're talking about (do you have a picture?) but maybe you could weave something through it or attach some beads or things that your budgies like?

KAZ, do you mean just add the pictures onto the end of that pinned thread? I can do that if you'd like, I just thought putting them all on this would be a good way of showing what I'd made and if it worked or not

Yep, you can see the chain in the picture I posted in this thread ---> http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=28187

The front chunky toy was also another 'best seller' the pet store told me about.. and another one my birds don't give two hoots about.

To be honest, I'm still trying to figure out what my birds like... I've even got a little bowl sitting in there with a few bits of brightly coloured bits and pieces - beads, coloured chunky plastic things, even some shredded paper - yet they're not even interested in looking through those either. They're happy just warbling away to eachother, eating, sleeping and tearing apart gum leaves. Oh and they quite like their swing, I'd forgotten about that.

That sounds really sweet :o it's not like they're unhappy or anything!

Maybe you could tie a little bell to the bottom of the chain with some rope? or one of those rattley ball things in the pics above? They're easy to find as cat toys.

Maybe your birds will like noisy toys :D

i find the little cat toys with bells in them no bird can normally resist tossing one of them around

Yeah add them in there as well as your topic here. As the toy one is pinned and easily found :o

Cheers :D

My guy Peanut LOVES bells, or anything else that makes "tinkly" noises or is shiny or has little bits to nibble... in fact one of his favourite places to visit is my bedroom, I have a hook on my mirror with lots of jewellery hanging on it & he loves to climb around in there! I just have to make sure to be in the room with him to make sure he doesn't get tangled in anything  ! He also loves to sit on top of my earring holders (the kind that look like a woman with branches growing out of her head), unhook the earrings & drop them down, little bugger! :D I'll have to take photos! Also anyone who visits wearing dangly earrings needs to watch out if they don't want a budgie nibbling at their ears...!
