Infertile Eggs

Featured Replies

Posted

My budgie pair laid 4 eggs over the last couple of weeks. #1 was laid on January 30th and #4 was laid on the 5th, I've candled them all and see no signs of being fertile. She's turned into an exceptional mom and her mate hector is also doing great. I believe the eggs are infertile due to the fact that she was paired with her father when they were all together and wasn't paired with hector when I removed the other birds and introduced the box. So, what would you all do in this situation? Would you remove the eggs? remove the box? let them be til they give up and try again?

Thanks

How is 30th Jan to now, 10th Feb over a month GB ??? :D

Dingo, How soon after they were laid did you candle them. You often don't see signs of life straight away. You could give it more, based on incubation time etc... or if you are 100% sure they are infertile, I'd remove them and the box and try again later if you wish. Let us know how you go.

I'd leave them another couple of days then remove them if no sign of life. Best of Luck Clearwing

I think I misread this the same way as GB. I was thinking they were laid on Jan 4th and 5th! Went back and re read, and realized Maesie is right. Oops :o

So if the eggs are only 5-10 days old, it sounds like maybe Dingo just candled them too soon?

I agreed candle too early to say if they are feritle or not... Given them a few more days...

Agreed.

Just a question dingo, is it a father and daughter mating...? If so I would not let them pair again... Just my thoughts...

No, this is a breeding between two unrelated birds, the hen of the pair was previously bonded to her father, Boidie. Boidie was removed when the box was added, I dont believe the hen and Hector mated as a result of her being bonded to Boidie.

I have candled the eggs every other day and they are still clear, one of them has developed spots like you'd see in an infertile chicken egg. Usually by day 5 of incubation you can see veins and the heart beating, by now I should see some development if they were fertile, but instead there's nothing but yolk.

So you all would remove the eggs and not let them finish the incubation? She's being such a good momma and setting so well I dont want to upset her by removing the eggs before she's ready, any input on that?

And how long would you remove the box for? the pair has apparently bonded now and Hector even goes in the box with her.

its really personal choise mate the only reason i remove eggs really is so the hen starys in condition health wize as sitting on the eggs takes a lot and destorts some hens mussels leaving a bulbus chest (not all)

so if i want another go i would remove eggs but no harm waiting for her to toss them

she will aventually but some times they dont and just lay more

so mabe mark these ones so if she does just lay not toss you know whats what

:D Settle down! If you had read Dingo's post correctly, you would have realised it hasn't been anywhere near a month.

Again... as mentioned before and by other, I'd leave them a bit longer.

The first egg was laid the 30 so add on 2 days, because the hen doesn't sit on them start away... okay so the first egg is about 12 days into the incubation cycle...

Okay in saying that, I would say the first and second egg are infertile... The third and fourth egg I would leave a bit longer... I'd check again Monday if nothing, thrown them out...

But the choice is yours... :D

just leave them mate the hen knows best :D if they infertile she will kick them after two weeks or so

in most cases

  • 2 weeks later...

For an update I removed the eggs and they took a couple weeks off. She began laying again on the 24th. I candled the first egg while marking the second and it appears to be fertile, I'll know for sure in a few days. I've noticed Hector is spending most of his time in the box with her. My other male, Boidie, didn't even go in the box when I bred him. Boidie is the hens father, Hector is her mate.
