Posted February 9, 201015 yr Hello all: I am hoping you can help me. My female parakeet (1.5yrs) viciously attacked by male parakeet, who is still only 5-6 months old. We brought him in about a month and a half ago and even though she would peck at him (the normal bickering) here and there, it never got to any red flag warning point. Other than this, they got along well and played together. The cage they shared was big enough, more than the recommended size. Water and food cups for each of them respectively and toys. Today early morning I heard fluttering around and screeching so I came to check it out. It's when I found my male parakeet bleeding and feathers around his crown all over. I noticed his eye, immediately took him out. His eye is shut and I believe he has lost it. It seems she was pecking at it and pecking at the crown of his head. It's just horrible. I called the vet but he is not in until tomorrow and I have no one else close by. I cleaned him up as much as I could and have put him a different cage. Previous to this, I nursed him by putting ointment for birds I found at Petco around his wounds. He is eating and acting okay but he has no eye, I think. What can I do in the meantime? Has anyone else had this experience. I am completely mortified. All I wanted was for him to have a nice healthy life. Please help.
February 9, 201015 yr Females are well known for "scalping" other birds...their partners, their chicks etc. Scalping is whats just happened to the baby. Common also when female is teritorial over a space. She had the cage then you added another ? The vet is the only option now, but meantime warmth.

February 10, 201015 yr I wouldn't be too sure that the actual eye was gone. Can you give us the exact measurements of the cage they were in. I know you said it was more than big enough, I'm just curious. I wouldn't use any ointment from a pet shop either. If it's still bleeding, you can put white pepper on it, or flour, and I agree with Kaz, keep him warm and in a quiet place. Good luck at the vet tomorrow, and make sure it's an avian vet.
February 10, 201015 yr Author its 35x18x18 now that i know, scalping describes what happened. thank you so much. i cant wait for tomorrow to come already. thank you all.

I hope tomorrow goes well. They should give it a good clean, and he may get some antibiotics to stop infection. The big thing is shock... this often gets them instead of the injury, even after the fact. Keep a close eye on him.
February 10, 201015 yr Best of luck. Hope all goes well. One of my birds once looked like he had lost an eye in an injury....when all cleared up he still had his eyeball...it had just retracted some due to the trauma.
