Posted February 9, 201015 yr Hi All,today we went to our bird shop for a visit and my birdman showed me some new stock he received yesteray.Well one of the hens had a noticeable egg bum so i purchased her and her bonded male.I have placed them in a breeding cage and she has checked out the nestbox I'm just wondering how long before she should lay the egg? Thanks Libby.
February 9, 201015 yr any where from a few days to a week. however if she has only just been set up she might not trust the box, just remove any found on the floor of the cage.

February 9, 201015 yr From eggbutt to laying is a day to a day and a half usually. Buying a hen with an egg on board is no sign you will have a whole clutch. She may not continue after this egg or another due to the change in her environment. Wait and see.
February 9, 201015 yr Hi Libby66, Its a very risky business buying hens, particularly if they have swelling in the abdomine or butt region. Many people send hens to the pet shop that have breeding difficulties or that show signs of cysts and these would be doubtful breeders. Hope yours does just have egg bum [as you call it] Cheers Clearwing
February 9, 201015 yr Yes as Clearwing said it could mean trouble like the start of a prolapse, old hens tend to rupture like that when you put them down to breed. I hope yours is a egg bum good luck.
