Sorry Renee for your loss, did any of your birds look sick besides luvey.

I would guess psittacosis good luck.

Not good :D BUT a real diagnosis from the vet is better than guesswork eh :o

Luvie doesn't look sick at all! :rip: It is Lou Lou with the bung eye.

The cock had a poopy bum last week, the hen has always been weak and susceptible.

Not good :o BUT a real diagnosis from the vet is better than guesswork eh :o

Precisely!

They are at the vet's in their fridge, Vet has not arrived yet. I have left a message requesting permission to take photos for here so hopefully we can match the conclusive diagnosis with pics. :D

Sorry Renee I meant Lou Lou, any way I hope all is well, and of course a proper diagnosis is extremely important when 2 birds go down at once.

Could even be cocci but I really hope it is nothing serious.

Oh. I hope none of the other birds have the same thing.

Oh... Sorry for your losses. I hope you get some answers soon.

I was very lucky that Heinrich was able to do a Post Mortum on both birds earlier this afternoon. In addition he kindly allowed me to be present, explained in detail what he was doing and looking for, AND when I popped out for a bit of fresh air he got his assistant to take photos in my absence (they are the in focus "good" photos) ^_^

So let us begin with age before beauty, and the first to cark it.

Grey Spangle 06 Cock bird.

P1010449.jpg

This was a surprise, macro examination revealed a huge tumor attached to the kidney.

P1010443.jpg

In Heinrich's words, the reason he was able to survive so long was that his other kidney was doing all the work.

The tumor in relation to his healthy heart:

Tumor dissected, this is by the way his right kidney:

Yes, he had a poopy bum last week and I pulled his vent feathers and let him go but what killed him was a massive kidney tumor.

GreyGreen Normal 07 Hen bird.

P1010445.jpg

Macro examination revealed no obvious cause of death. It was observed that she had a "dirty vent". A crop swab was taken and tested but no "live trichomonas" were observed and therefor test was inconclusive.

A further full examination was conducted with all major organs looking perfectly normal.

Liver:

P1010437.jpg

Heart:

P1010436.jpg

Stomache (or Proventiculous and Gizzard):

P1010435.jpg

Nothing untoward observed upon dissection of proventiculous and gizzard either or small intestine.

Moreover a detailed examination of crop was undertaken and no lesions consistent with Canker observed.

(sorry to repeat the photo but please have a good look at her "throat" - no ulcers or lesions)

P1010445.jpg

Result of macro examination was inconclusive (ie, internally she looked healthy) so Crop and Poop swabs were taken and sent off for further tests.

Results back next week - Watch this Space!

You would be surprised how many of are birds actually die from tumors......

You should put a warning, sensitive people, DO NOT ENTER! Pics of deceased birds!

Sorry Ratzy ^_^ A warning had been added to sub-title.

Not so brave. I had to take a break after the first Post Mortum and by the time I had returned the second was almost done ;)

That makes me very brave as I cut the old boy open my self and Greg helped me idenify parts. I thought it would make me sick but I was fine. :budgiedance:

And the best part was I found a tumor and if I loose anymore birds I have the micrscope to help identify things now too. :P

Now that i have done one I will do more when needed.

It is Great because Greg knows all the parts of the anatomy and what they should look like when healthy which is a great help.

Well the results have come in on the Greygreen hen: Positive for Chlamydia Psittacosis. B)

This hen, by the way was the wide faced Greygreen hen Luvie nursed back to life in December AND who I had planned to breed into my Rec Pied line this year. Hey ho. :) Fortunately for me she bred very well last year into my Spangle line and I will use her daughters instead.

So just as well I started the Doxy last week and they will all be getting the full 6 week treatment as Heinrich has advised. Lou Lou (whose eye cleared up on day 3 of doxy treatment incidentally) and Doug will be returned to the Young Uns aviary shortly as too Luvie and Rose to the Adult aviary.

Incidentally I thought she may have been one of the 3 hens I took to him before Christmas that tested for low levels of Canker, but she was not.

After talking things over with Heinrich I have decided to try and keep a closed aviary this year and if I do see a budgie I just have to have then they will be off to Heinrich's for full check up after completing the quarantine program. :)

So the next question is how did it slip in? ;)

And the answer is: Quite frankly I do not care, I take responsibility for a bird's well-being and care the moment I purchase it. B)

I am pleased you got a good result, sorry it had to Chlamydia Psittacosis , I am very pleased that Lou Lou eye has cleaned up, it must of been the psittacosis too.

Well the good news you are on top of it and hopefully you won't loose anymore. ;)

Yes, and thanks to you too and GB who had the courage to bluntly prod me into a re-think. :D

Russel Wolf's long-term forecast on the day helped me decide to put everyone on Doxy but it was your posts that prompted me to do it then and there :) .... I was cooking our evening meal at the time, I find I have to step aside and do something totally different for it all to sink in and put 2 and 2 together. :D

As a result I only lost the Greygreen hen ... it could have been so much worse. :)

Well Renee I am glad there are no hard feelings, :D and everthing is working out. :)
