Posted February 3, 201015 yr Hi Everyone, I noticed today that my budgie violet's cere has started to turn brown she is bonded with indy and they preen and he feeds her constantly My questions are is her cere brown enough for breeding? or should i wait for it to get browner before transfering them to the breeding cage? Many thanks Libby
February 3, 201015 yr It looks alright from here, they say the cere should be walnut brown but all hens are different. Is she show great interest in the cock and flirting etc, mating playing out role then yes
February 3, 201015 yr Author Thanks for replying so fast Kaz,I've had her about 6 months now and when i bought her i told my bird man that i wanted an older hen, i'll double check her eyes tomorrow, if she has the iris ring i asume she's okay to breed? Libby

They have iris rings from 5-6 months. Its the colour of the iris ring that tells the age. She looks a little too young to me and thats why the inquiry.
February 3, 201015 yr Author O.k will check for the colour tomorrow, and will post to let you know or i'll try to get a better photo she's a bit camera shy everytime i point the camera at her she flies away Thanks once again Kaz

February 4, 201015 yr Whilst this bird no doubt will breed the question is, should you breed with her? I believe the bird is too young and should be allowed to go through another moult before she breeds that may be 2-3 more months. Clearwing

February 4, 201015 yr This teaches the newbies to breeding budgies that it is not all about cere colour. Cere colour is NO INDICATOR of old enough to breed. Iris rings are also another adding factor to determine age and old enough to breed......... or not.
