February 2, 201015 yr Sorry GB but I really think you have a feather duster, it's got the shark thing happening too (long secondary flights). BUT then it might not be, just watch it closely will be able to tell in a week. So far the wings are quite tidy but it does have that look about it. Just had photo 3 and 4 I think looks more feather duster but then I have also seen that fluffed up look in my friends birds, she looks hungry so she's all fluffed. Later later photos she looks fairly normal. You can tell by the time they are 5 weeks old if they are a mop or not. Keeps us updated Edited February 2, 201015 yr by splat
February 2, 201015 yr Author Sorry GB but I really think you have a feather duster, it's got the shark thing happening too (long secondary flights). BUT then it might not be, just watch it closely will be able to tell in a week. So far the wings are quite tidy but it does have that look about it. i was thinking she is sitting very lazy though the wings look like all my other birds breed the thing that gets me is is very light and very thin is feather mass is huge but apart from that its feather develop meant is in time its beak is fine tail feathers and its quiet but when it does churp its normal and quiet loud i guess i will have to wait and see i just wish i could tell now as i will send it to god soon as i know as i rather that than it suffer ( they do suffer )
February 2, 201015 yr Normally mops are big and fat while with the parents as they demand all the food because they can't get enough nutritian from their food so they always want more , something like that, BUT once out of the nest and the parents stop feeding them they loose weight quickly.
February 2, 201015 yr Author I agree - looks like a mop(feather duster) to me i thought their feathers were ment to grow at a rapped rate and also that the tail feathers were ment to be more than normal mmmmmmmm and here i was thinking i finally got a goodn i did feel in my gut something was wrong ...however his sisters and brothers are all long feathered as she is and they are all also very big this is whats confusing me it was possable to get a supper chick from the pairing i paired so....thats why i was uncertain but i will go with you guys on this however i will wait for a few more responces although you guys are probbly right id hate to send a good bird to god if were wrong but also i dont want to keep it alive if it is as its hungry im feeding it extra twice a day do people agree its a mop ???? thanks guys for your opinion i can get more pics if needed just let me know what to snap and i will i really want to be sure on this one before i do anything hasty
February 2, 201015 yr GB by 5 weeks the wings should be messy like extra flights etc and they have this wow head about them that makes you think you have this wonderful bird I would just leave her for the time being and see how she turns out if you think she is fine because I had 2 this year that I was quite sure the were mops with great feather and wow heads and they were normal not mops.
February 2, 201015 yr Look at the tail feathers, have the main two tail shafts grown beyond the other tail primaries, or is the tail still short. If the two main tail feathers are long then it will not be a mop, if they are short then chances are you have a very pretty mop. cheers Clearwing
February 2, 201015 yr Does she make a different chirp than the others?? FD's sound quite different. Keep an eye on the head feathers - on a FD, the base of the feather shaft always has 2-3mm of sheath on it from continuous growing. I agree the flights are fairly tidy for a FD but she defiantly looks like a FD to me otherwise. Cirrus and Quilla at around 4 weeks old Edited February 2, 201015 yr by **Liv**
February 2, 201015 yr Author okay guys i will look at tail shaft shorter mop longer normal and i will check the feather sheath she has normal sound when she does chirp which is not much her feathers are quiet tidy so i will go and asess her as im going to feed her again if she has not feed herself or been feed thanks guys i will get more pics too
February 2, 201015 yr Author okay my chick has a short tail but no shorter than anyone else in the clutch the long one is longer than the other ones but not by much the head feathers do not have sheaths on them and seem to be more balanced now when she blows she is happy enough but still looks not feed but then again this morning the whole clutch bar two chicks seemed to be not feed and hungry this is a clutch of all fosters bar one chick i think mum and dad have just had enough of them all but all other options bar rearing are gone so looks like i may have to rear the chicks myself the oldest one is eatting its self i will leave it and the one being feed and feed others my self it still most probably a mop though by sounds of everyone's thoughts so.. i will give her one welk more to see for sure
February 2, 201015 yr She looks mop in some photos and in others she doen't but these 2 pics she does look mop but she looks hungry all fluffed up maybe that is all it is but time will tell. But if she has left the nest and the parents are feeding her that is a good sign that is a mop.
February 2, 201015 yr Author she hasnt left nest as it hot i have nest on floor and the door off the chicks just wander around i put them all back at night she is hungry though in thoughs pick and i did feed her she was fine after that i will update i just rang breeder to see if any mops in his line of history they are going to get back to me
February 2, 201015 yr Author She seems to be a feather duster and as with others, time will tell for sure.
February 3, 201015 yr Doesn't look quite the same as a mop but you'll see in time. What did you breed her from?
February 3, 201015 yr Author Doesn't look quite the same as a mop but you'll see in time. What did you breed her from? i breed her from one of my two split lacewing opaline grey green boys that i got just before i got your boys the one that could fly is the dad the mum is a really big hen my biggest i have she has loads of feather the cock comes from a breeder who has loads of feather and his mum was apparently a massive big lacewing hen i rang him but he wont be home till tonight so i asked if he could look at the familey history a bit for me see if its anywhere in their i know the hen has nothing in her history so...thats going right right back through alot of generations older sister her tail and older sisters tail they are same other lacewing day youngers tail the same another sibbling to this hen the others still are not feathered but also big like her and the yf grey
February 3, 201015 yr I think it just needs feeding, they say when you have good feather in your breedroom you undoutly get featherdusters. All you can do is wait and see.
February 3, 201015 yr Author I think it just needs feeding, they say when you have good feather in your breedroom you undoutly get featherdusters. All you can do is wait and see. yes it does need feeding and i am feeding it myself and placing it back so it can be feed by other chicks mum dad what ever but seems that it just doesnt seem interested unless i feed it so... and im not to well at moment so not really up to having a budgie 24 seven in my pocket as i may forget and hurt it im feeding it two times a day but mabe it needs more im just hopeing it will get the hint like the other chicks and crack the seed its self but its just contented to prune its self and sleep im thinking of taking it to a freinds to get constant attention but if i do that i know they will fall in love and i will have to let them keep her as i will feel bad they did all the work she doesnt eat much when i do feed her she doesnt seem hungry but does eat willingly from a eye dropper
February 3, 201015 yr Hi G. B., back in Nov I posted about my last lot of chicks. They were all feathers also and advice was, I had doubled up on long feather gene? I had four, 2 look pretty good now, last 2 are still "loose" feathered and one has short tail as if it's moulted out AND one has a very distinct loud chirp. They were very slow compared to others coming out of nest and very clumsy fliers as well.Their feathers arn't still growing like the pics of mops I saw. Maybe yours has a similar problem? Mine aren't for show so I don't mind, I just watch if I breed from them. Hope yours turn out o.k. (my parents were both big show stock olive cinnamon & gr Cinnamon). Thought this might be a clue.

They just look natural feathers to me, they appear to have plenty of blood in them I would be more worried about them being french moulters than anything and I don't even think that is the case.
February 11, 201015 yr Hi G.B., Have you taken any more pics of your lacewing yet? How is it looking now?
