Posted April 27, 200520 yr Poor little girl I saw her today all fuffed up and with her head tucked over he back sleeping, and i but it down to the fact that is is wet and raining here today, but then checking in of them all again I saw her throwing up seeds !!!!!!!!!!!!! Quick smart i called the Vet to see if she could be seen, since I know this is a bad sign for budgies. I got in and I'vejust come back now with Baytrill to give her once a day. Nothing was wrong with the swipes he did (both crop and fecal) but there was a rise in something with a fancy name which isn't good for them (good for us to have but not birds) Poor sweety. But as least I know I got to it early. She is now alone in the spare cage I had, Pie is doing quite well with out her next to him, I think it's becuase he can't see she is in another cage. She has a lamp on her for heat as he suggested and I'm making her some egg and carrot mix as easy food to eat for her. The vet was really nice, told you why he was doing this or that and showed me how to give the meds ( only after checking that it was easy for me to catch her to give it to her.) The fist time he handled her she didn't make a noise but the second time she had a bit of a fuss which I was happy to see, i mean if someone grabed you and shoved something down your thoat to your belly you wouldn't want to get handled again either.
April 27, 200520 yr Eek! I have some meds to give mine too. One of mine was throwing up seeds yesterday. Have you ever seen a bird vomit before? Not a pleasant sight, and somewhat scary too. He hasn't done it again and is acting fine, of which I am glad. Do you remember what your vet thought it might be?
April 27, 200520 yr Author thanks Bea I hope so too, she should be getting better in 24-48 hours. rainbow- it is very scary and yes I have seen on do it before (one of my earily birs but i didn't know it was bad then ) so I knew she was beeing sick and not trying to feed another like a male. Not that it looks at all the same. I don't remember the full term but it's a bacteral infection. Edited April 27, 200520 yr by nerwen
April 27, 200520 yr No, it does not look the same at all, does it? It is not controlled like normal regurgitation. I held him on my finger until he stopped because I didn't know what else to do...you know, like you'd sit with a sick child??...it lasted a good while too. Did Freckle make whimpering noises?
April 27, 200520 yr Author No she made no sound at all from the time she was sick the 15 min car ride and the next 15 mins wait for the vet. Nothing I was really worried she only make that cranky leave me alone sound when he held her the second time. I've checked on her and she is sleeping under the lamp. I didn't want to bother her any more than she was with Pie dancing around her all worried looking so I didn't pick her up untill after she had finished. It was as if she knew I was tying to help since she lept onto my finger and didn't make a fuss when i moved to her the other cage. I was happy to see try to eat some more seeds, I though that had to me a good sign. The seed and water from the other cage have been thrown out and relpaced just in case as well, since the vet wasn't sure how she got sick. Edited April 27, 200520 yr by nerwen
April 27, 200520 yr Mine was in the cage with the others and I got him out. He acted fine before and after (but was being sick for about 20 minutes) and has been fine all day today, but he went to the vet anyway. Of course, he wasn't sick there... Has she perked up any yet?
April 27, 200520 yr Author no they never seem sick at the vets do they. Not a lot yet I think she needs to rest up after that trip. Tell you all now this was the first vet trip ever. (with a bird) And it was a lot of thanks to the info I have picked up on this board that helped me. 20 mins wow that would had me panicked. She only lasted 5 mins maybe at the topsmost. But then she could have been sick before with out me seeing. I've never had to use a lamp on a bird before should it be left on all night as well? Didn't think to ask at the vets, I was just glad she was not as sick as I was imagining.
April 27, 200520 yr I'm not sure about the lamp...but if she is not trying to get away from the heat I think I would leave it on for awhile. I'm glad she wasn't as sick as you imagined her to be too. Keep us posted on her progress.
April 27, 200520 yr I think you should leave the lamp on all night. Unless it is one that overheats easily and could cause a fire. Night time is colder than in the day so i guess it would be more important to keep her warm. You don't want her wasting all her energy.
April 27, 200520 yr Author that's very true and it is heading ito winter here. I normally have then covered over but I would rather her warm. Not sure aobut the heat I will check it before I go to bed tonight (it's 2pm right now) if i'm worried i'll turn it off. here is a picture of her now: she never sleeps with her head tucked up.
April 27, 200520 yr Author Thanks Julie :bluebudgie: She has eaten quite a bit over the afternoon so I'm very pleased.
April 27, 200520 yr Poor little darling...she looks pooped! (((hugs))) for Freckle. Rainbow-when Jem got sick the vet told me to have a heat lamp on her cage so she wasn't wasting energy on trying to stay warm.
April 28, 200520 yr Author thanks for the relpies guys dwells- yeah yesterday was a rotten day Bea- yeah that's what the vet told me the lamp was for, even told me the type and idea's on were to pick up a cheap one before I told him we had one. She is still sleeping alot and looking sorry for herself I gave her meds today and did a bang up job, (Laughing out loud). At lest she got most of it.
April 28, 200520 yr Where do you pick up a cheap one? I would be interested to know. Still sending good healing vibes Freckle's way!
April 28, 200520 yr Author He said if you just when to a second hand store or salvos ( not sure if they are known out of aussie they are a charity outlet store) and you should find one. Edited April 28, 200520 yr by nerwen
April 28, 200520 yr Author I'll hold you that Dwells, (Laughing out loud). thanks for the tip I didn't know that. If I ever need to get an electrical thing I will be asking about that
April 29, 200520 yr Author : As if it wasn't bad enough !!! I'm glad today that I had a wonderful idea in thinking the very best heat lamp you could ever have is: ****drumroll**** The sun. I took Freckle out and put her dead out in the sun were no shade to get to her for aobut an hour and a half. She picked right up, she wasn't fuffed at all and was dancing all over the cage and she started to sing out to the wild birds that flew over. I took my thermonitor out to see what the temp was and it ended up at 36/37 c which is the the temp the vet said was good for her. I took the others out too and they got the added joy of a shower
April 29, 200520 yr That would have been so great for her! Lovely and warm with some fresh air on the side! :glare:
April 29, 200520 yr Author Yep and it did me wonders too to see her happy again . heres to hoping for more sunshine state weather. (Laughing out loud)
April 30, 200520 yr Author she is great, I wanted to kill her at 5.30 am this morning when she wanted to prove how great she was by singing to the others and running all over her cage. :glare: Just lucky the other knew it was a crazy time to be awake and didn't answer. (Laughing out loud) She is back to ripping things up just like her normal self and I think she going to be just fine now. edit to add- and thank you for thinking of us Edited April 30, 200520 yr by nerwen
April 30, 200520 yr I'm so pleased for you and Freckle!!! :glare: Do you have to keep her separate for a certain amount of time?
