Posted February 2, 201015 yr It is just not my year so far... A snake and now two budgies will swollen legs... Both boys are gold rings and both have swollen legs, the leg that has the ring on it... So now I have had to cut their rings off... Both seem to be happier about it but we will see, budgies can be very sneaky at times... Now i'm at a loss as to why two birds at the same time both have one swollen leg each... Could it be they are allergic to a metal but why now? Any suggestions as to why... I'm to do some reading myself aswell... Thanks guys...
February 2, 201015 yr Author Hmmm... They show no signs of scaley (hence the reason why i ruled it out) but will give a few treatments on legs to see if it makes any differences... Thanks Kaz...
February 2, 201015 yr More common for hens to get swollen legs and need ring removal. Did you replace with split rings so you can maintain records.
February 2, 201015 yr Yes I agree, scally mite under the ring is most likely, funny enough I just cut the ring of a hen I borrowed today for exactly that purpose. She never had scally on her face, but the ring leg was swollen, when I cut the ring off the scale fell away , I bathed it in disinfectant and the hen is happy. Clearwing
February 2, 201015 yr Yep true I helped The hen did not have any sign of scaley mite on her face but under the ring it was caked with it
February 2, 201015 yr Author Nothing on face or legs or vents but it was under the ring... no where else... Grrr... Now I know why i missed it... Grrr... No I haven't put splits on yet Kaz, I'll pick some up from MBC I think... Thanks all for your help... Now I hope to the boys get better soon... I can always use them in the baby cage to teach the young how to act, thats if the adults do not accept them back... Thank you all again so much...

At least the hens get a break from him now though... hee hee Have you already removed the rings? I would suggest you bath the foot in disinfectant not diluted but straight disinfectant, this will often take away the swelling. And I'm sure they'll still breed as lets face it, it takes more than a sore foot to stop nature. Clearwing
February 2, 201015 yr also vinegar is used as a blood vessel shrinkage method to get tight legrings onto a baby budgie so maybe could be used as a bath to free the gunk and reduce swelling before drastic measures are taken ? In saying this....................by the time we notice a bird with swollen leg and legring issues its often far too late and ring removal seems to be the only option. February 2, 201015 yr Author Thanks for those tips guys... I will give them a shot... what sort of disinfectant can be used clearwing...?
February 2, 201015 yr Thanks for those tips guys... I will give them a shot... what sort of disinfectant can be used clearwing...? I just use household disinfectant, from the laundry cupboard. I used to use detol but now just a generic brand. Many years ago detol was used as the cure for scally face it was applied straight to the affected area, I found it a bit harsh on the beak and nostrils but still use it on the feet. It works very quickly. Cheers Clearwing
